After a closely contested first quarter, Marshall pulled away and held a double-digit lead at halftime. Edison came roaring back, scoring 52 points in the second half and ultimately outlasting Marshall by a final score of 74-66. Here we recap this hard-fought contest with five takeaways.
CLAWSON PLAYS EFFICIENTLY
One of the main takeaways from last night’s contest was how efficiently unsigned senior Jared Clawson played. The lead guard made all 8 of his free throws and shot 4 of 10 from the field, including 2 of 4 from deep on his way to scoring 18 points. Despite being known for his ability to shoot from distance, Clawson emphasized getting to the rim where he either finished, kicked it out to an open teammate, or drew contact.
CASILLAS THE X-FACTOR
One could argue that without Gabriel Casillas, Edison does not win this game. The 6-foot-5 forward was a menace on the defensive end and relentless on the boards. Casillas was best in transition and when attacking the basket but showed that he can also knock down a three if left open. He finished the game with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds.
TAYLOR HAS A CHANCE
2021 wing Jack Taylor was the most talented prospect in the gym and has a legitimate chance to earn a scholarship. At 6-foot-4, he is a good athlete who can shoot with range but is also a very good passer. Taylor has good defensive potential and is active on the glass. It will be interesting to see how much more he can improve over the next few months.
HWANG DOES A BIT OF EVERYTHING
2021 point guard Ilias Hwang scored just 3 points and attempted just 2 field goals, but was a vital cog for his team as the primary ball-handler. Not only did he look to set up his teammates consistently, but he also did his due diligence on the boards. Hwang’s performance in this game is the perfect example of a player making an impact by playing within his means.
DEFENSE KEY FOR THE EAGLES
Edison forced Marshall into 15 turnovers. Clawson and Casillas were key in that department, recording 4 and 5 steals respectively. They did a great job turning defense into offense, scoring a good number of points in transition.
