Teams to Watch!
The Favorites: Westover HS is the favorite to take home the championship as they are undefeated on the season at 24-0 and feature: D’Marco Dunn, Traymond Willis-Shaw, Darius Jewell and Isaiah Bridges. All who are legit college prospects and can go off for numbers at any given time.
Potential Cinderella Team: Overhills HS: The Jaguars played very well against Westover in both of their matchups this season so don’t be shocked to see them give Westover some good competition if they meet in the Semis. The key to success in the tournament is stellar guard play and that’s exactly what Overhills has. Senior Guard Jase Ford can fill it up in a heartbeat while Senior Guard Zach Lowery is also a player that can get it going.
Teams that can pull off the upset!
Terry Sanford: The Bulldogs are another team that has taken Westover to the wire twice but will most likely be on the road when they play them if the make it to the championship Friday night. Sophomore All-County Guard Davis Molnar will be a valuable piece to the team success as well as Seniors Kyron Kelly, Yates Johnson and Kaylon Keys.
Pine Forest: Although they are a young group, they don’t play with fear and could really hit their stride if they can get out of the first round of the tournament. Senior Guard Marquis Eskew has been solid throughout the year, putting together nice performances. While Sophomore Guard Tristan Harkins and Freshman Guard Isaiah Washington have both shown that they can take over a game offensively at any given moment.
Cape Fear: They are another young team but they don’t back down from any challenge. The Colts feature Freshman Of The Year Tremayne Parker who is a special talent as well as Senior Guard Marquail James who is a college prospect. The X factor of the tourney could very well be Sophomore Guard RJ McDonald who has shown his ability to take over games at different points of the season.
