Luke Schwartzhoff is averaging 19 points a game for a Lancer team that had won 11 straight games before running into ranked Class AA teams Lake City and Caledonia. With a chance to win 20 games still there, it’s been a strong season for La Crescent-Hokah.
“This season is going well, we are currently 18-7 and just played a very close game with a very talented Lake City,” Luke said.
“I have been playing well this season but am always looking for ways to improve my game. Our young guys have stepped up big from the three-point line. We are looking to build on what we have done this year come postseason.”
The Lancers are entering the playoffs with a lot of confidence. They have beaten Stewartville, they’ve beaten St. Charles, they pushed Lake City to the buzzer, and now the playoffs will be there proving ground.
“I am looking to continue to be a leader on the floor and one of our main sources of scoring and rebounding,” Luke explained. “All of our guys are very confident that we can make a run at a section title this year.
“I think we opened a lot of eyes across the section with our nail biter against Lake City. We have a group of guys who are all bought into this team and are willing to do whatever they can to help us get in the W column and that is what will help us be successful in the postseason.”
Schwartzhoff is headed to UW LaCrosse but he’s a local basketball fan that’s learned from some of best area college bigs in recent years.
“I have grown up watching Gopher basketball and have enjoyed watching Jordan Murphy and Trevor Mbakwe play,” said Schwartzhoff. “I love energy and effort they play with. More personally, my dad has always pushed me to be the best player and person I can be.
“Also, Coach (Ryan) Thibodeau has done a tremendous job with our program and giving opportunities to our guys to get better and using us to the best of our abilities.”
Luke is excited to be about of UW-La Crosse basketball in the future as he spoke highly of Coach Kent Dernbach and the program in general.
“I committed to UW La Crosse (in January) and am excited for my future there,” Luke said. “I really like the way coach Dernbach runs the program and they have some very solid young players that I’m looking forward to playing with and learning from.
“I also like campus a lot and love the La Crosse area.”
