College Commitment: Cam Underwood (2017 Lewis & Clark/Everett CC)
To say that the college basketball journey has been a winding road for Cam Underwood certainly wouldn’t be an understatement. The Spokane native started out on the East Coast only to come back to the Pacific Northwest in search of actually getting some court time. The 6-foot-7 stretch four settled in at Everett CC this season and next year he’ll continue his career in the Rockies having signed with Colorado-Colorado Springs.
“Coach (Jeff) Culver and UCCS reached out to me early in the season, so we had a good relationship,” Underwood said. “So after I took my visit and got to watch a game I knew it would be a good fit for me. The team seems like a real solid group, and all the coaches know the game and relate to the players well. The school itself was really nice. I like how the buildings are all pretty new and the campus is big.”
Underwood committed to the Division II Mountain Lions while finishing out this season at Everett. A 2017 grad of Lewis & Clark High School, the forward originally went to Division I St. Peter’s, redshirted a year and then sparingly played in 2018-19, averaging 0.2 points and 0.3 rebounds in limited minutes.
Seeking a fresh start, Underwood came back home and landed at Everett and has prospered. He averaged 11.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists this past season and stepped outside the arc to knock down 20 threes. He has appreciated the opportunity to get not only court time but the chance to learn.
“Well this is like my first season really playing this much since high school,” Underwood said. “The past few years I haven’t played much and it’s hard to know what you need to work on when you don’t play. So I think this past year has helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses and given me a good picture of the kind of work I’m going to put in over the off season. Coach said he’s recruiting me to play the 4, but I’m ready to play wherever they want me.”
Underwood will have two years of eligibility at Colorado-Colorado Springs.
