Continue ReadingEvery February, the Team Loaded organization uses their pull in the basketball community to put on one of the best events in the state to help raise money for cancer research. They held a walk to raise money in the morning, and starting at one they had six games featuring teams from all over the state of Virginia and one from North Carolina. While the day was about much more than basketball, I attended five of the six games and there was tons of talent throughout the day. Below is a list of the scores from the games I attended, along with 10 standouts from the first few games. Stay tuned for part two as well.
Menchville 66 Highland Springs 37
LC Bird 55 St. Anne’s-Belfield 49
Life Christian Academy 60 Catholic 40
Blue Ridge 62 Moravian Prep (NC) 54
John Marshall 82 Trinity Episcopal 73
Chaunce Jenkins | 6’4” WG | Menchville 2020
Jenkins has shown all year long that he’s one of the best available prospects in the state, and this past weekend was no different. In a blowout win over Highland Springs, Jenkins showed his next level potential with a number of plays that exhibited both is athletic ability and his skill set that has come a long way over the past few years. At 6’4”, he’s a guy who can play well above the rim, he uses his size and athleticism on both ends of the floor and he showed his ability to create and score the basketball at multiple levels. He finished with a game high 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and pitched in 3 steals as well.
Gilbert Brown | 6’0” PG | Menchville 2020
Another impressive available guard from Menchville, Brown is a guy who thrives on both ends of the floor with his quickness and all-out style of play. He has a lightning quick first step with the ball in his hands, he’s an extremely fast guy end-to-end whether he has the ball or doesn’t and he’s able to use his quickness and good instincts on the defensive end as he can guard the ball full court and shoot passing lanes to get steals as well. He finished with just 9 points but also had 4 steals and made his impact on the defensive end throughout the game.
Tyler Henderson | 5’8” PG | LC Bird 2020
Henderson isn’t the biggest guy, but he’s shown time and time again that he’s one of the best true point guards in the state and can make everyone on his team better as a playmaker. He sets the tone on both ends of the floor and his defensive impact can’t be understated. He has great instincts, he lives in the paint as a playmaker and when he needs to score the basketball for his team he has the ability to get to the line and make shots from multiple levels. He finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 assists, and had 5 steals on the defensive end as well.
Promyse Ferguson | 6’3” WG | LC Bird 2021
One of the breakout juniors in the Richmond area, Ferguson continues to show that he’s a guy colleges should absolutely take a look at moving forward as a possible scholarship level prospect. The 6’3” wing has good size on the perimeter and continues to fill out, he’s a knock down shooter from deep who works well without the basketball and he’s an underrated defender who has good instincts and makes winning plays on both ends. He finished with a game high 15 points, shooting 4-for-8 from deep.
Davien Banks | 6’1” WG | LC Bird 2022
One of a number of sophomores that makes an impact for this Skyhawks group, Banks is a fundamentally sound wing that competes on both ends and can score in a number of ways. He got hot from deep early in their win over STAB, and the way he shot the basketball he demonstrated good form and picked his spots well throughout the game. He made the right play consistently on both ends, finishing with 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 3-for-3 shooting from deep.
Carter Lang | 6’8” PF | STAB 2023
Lang has quietly been one of the best freshmen in the state this year, and continues to show that he’s an intriguing young prospect that should see a lot of division one interest when the time comes around. He started on varsity last year as an eighth grader, but the confidence and comfortability he exhibits on the court now is light years from what he did last year. He’s not the most athletic guy but he plays with a good motor, he knows how to use his size in the paint on both ends and he rebounds the ball well and shows good touch around the rim as well. He finished with an impressive double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds in their loss to LC Bird.
Logan Washington | 6’6” PF | Life Christian 2020
Washington has quietly been a force for an LCA team that has been very successful over the past few years, and his blue collar mentality makes him a very impactful player for them in the post. While he’s only 6’6”, he has incredibly long arms and is a good leaper with good timing as a shot blocker and finisher, and he makes energy plays on both ends that help his team. He finished with 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and pitched in 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals as well.
Kenard Richardson | 6’2” G | Life Christian 2021
Richardson continues to show that he’s possibly the most underrated and under recruited in the Richmond area, and while he’s been very productive over the past few years at Varina he’s showing another side to him at LCA. He reclassified there this year and they have him playing more on the ball and playing the point, which is something we haven’t seen from him. He made good decisions with the ball in his hands, he seems to be improving his body and becoming more explosive and he still has the dog in him on both ends that makes him a nightmare to match up with. He finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists to just one turnover in their win over Catholic.
Ikechi Chantilou | 6’3” WG/WF | Life Christian 2021
Chantiilou is a guy that some people have forgotten in the Richmond area, but if you think back to what he did at George Wythe before reclassifying at LCA you’ll remember he’s one of the more talented guys in the area. He’s a long wing that’s a natural athlete that can get downhill and has great body control to finish through traffic, he’s great in transition as a guy who can finish above the rim and he’s much improved as a shooter and ball handler as well. He finished with 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 from deep and he used his athleticism to gather 5 rebounds and get 2 blocks as well.
Sterling White | 5’11” PG | Catholic 2021
While Catholic struggled for much of the game against LCA, White continues to impress as a true point guard who can set the tone on both ends of the floor. He’s a poised playmaker who handles pressure well, lives in the lane off the bounce and competes defensively where he can guard the length of the floor and make ball handlers uncomfortable. He finished with a team high 11 points and competed from tip to buzzer.
