With high potential collegiate athletes growing from different teams in the league, it makes every night an interesting matchup. At the end of regular season play, it may seem nearly identical to the previous year in terms of standings but this year, there are two league champions, Folsom and Rocklin. As the playoffs approach, four teams look to leave there mark and make a deep run for the Golden 1 Center.
#3 Folsom vs. #14 Weston Ranch
The reigning champions for the Sierra Foothill League for the past three years in a row, look to continue there domineering play in the playoffs. Folsom current carries a prominent 22-6 overall record with a 9-1 record in the league. The Bulldogs have been resilient and comfortable towards the end of the season, currently holding an eleven game win streak. The bright lights of the playoffs is an aspect that motivates the Bulldogs to play with a lot of passion and determination. With three CIF championship already won in the past, the most recent in 2015 led by Jordan Ford, now the star point guard at St. Mary’s College, Folsom has not slowed down ever since, fighting there way every year to regain triumphantly. Standing in their way of capturing another title is the Weston Ranch Cougars. The Cougars just recently won their game against Chavez by an outstanding 23 points. Weston Ranch is currently on a three-game win streak and has been playing very confident on the road, 7-3, as they look to battle their way to a thrilling upset victory over the Bulldogs.
#4 Rocklin vs. #13 Davis Sr.
The Co-Champions did not go down without a fight all season. Rocklin has been known for its rich history of basketball and they have continued to prove that they are worthy of being one of the toughest teams to beat in the area. Overall, the Thunders have improved since last year with a 9-1 record in the league and surpassing twenty game win mark for the second consecutive season in a row, finishing the regular season 23-5. Rocklin has been playing high-quality basketball all year long and they have multiple weapons on the team with player performing astronomically throughout the past couple of games for the Thunder especially there seniors, Donovan Lopez, Handre Reinecke, and Darrius Kendall, who has been dominant for the Thunder since his freshman year. The Thunder looks to display much experience, making it to the playoffs many times in the past, look to use that to there advantage as they hope to contain a hungry Davis group. The Blue Devils who also qualified for the playoffs last season has been struggling this season but hopes to recoup as they head to a hostile Rocklin home court for a tough battle Wednesday night.
#2 Whitney vs. #15 Cordova
A much improved season for Whitney during the 2019-2020 season, securing a spot in the CIF SJS playoffs. This season, Whitney has exceeded the twenty game win column, 23-5, and the Wildcats look to survive into the second round of the playoffs after being knocked out in the first round last season. Whitney has been playing pretty strong both at home, 8-3 and on the road, 8-2, with an emphatic 7-0 in neutral sites. Although they lost there last game of the regular season, senior Ryan King and the rest of the tenacious Wildcats will look to start a winning streak throughout the playoffs in hopes of winning the school’s first championship. There will be an interesting showdown tonight at Whitney High School as the Wildcats look to protect the home-court advantage against a feisty Cordova Lancer team, who is already coming off a recent win over Mira Loma on Tuesday night.
#11 Oak Ridge @ #6 Cosumnes Oaks
Oak Ridge has continued to battle there way through a rigorous Sierra Foothill League schedule and qualified for the playoffs once again, outlasting Granite Bay and Del Oro. Overcoming many tough teams is nothing new for the Trojans. Last season, they made it to the fourth round of the playoffs and this season, they look to go even further than they did. Oak Ridge has familiar faces on the team who understands the how to grind out games in the playoffs. With a better record on the road, 6-3, Oak Ridge looks to use that and steal a big first-round road victory from Cosumnes Oaks come tonight. The Wolfpack, who is a tough team to beat at home, 9-1, will look to even out the series as the Trojans won the first meeting between the two teams early on in the season with a final score of 54-52.
