Class AA’s Top Ten Freshman
What Class AA freshman have had the best varsity seasons to date? PHD runs you through those names today!
You will notice this is mostly guards as of course guards are able to develop quicker than bigs. You can expect the names of the big men to start emerging this summer and into next year.
Lincoln Kienholz (6’0 PG) of Pierre. Obviously Lincoln has a bit more chances to produce as the Governors are only a 1-win team. That said, to have games of 18 points against Brookings, 28 against Sturgis, and 19 against Mitchell is impressive any way you look at it. It’s not a total surprise as Lincoln had a significant role on a state championship football team but he’s continued that success in hoops.
Michael Mors (6’4 SF) of Yankton. The younger brother of nationally ranked junior Matthew Mors has started to make a name for himself as a part of the Yankton main varsity unit doing a bit of everything. He’s knocking down a couple shots a game, earning a few deflections, and getting in passing lanes. A nice start to his career and it’s coming on the 2nd ranked team in state.
Taylen Ashley (5’10 PG) of Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Ashley is a quick, strong guard that’s earned varsity time as a freshman because of a game understanding past his years. Ashley is more matured physically and mentally than many his age plus he’s coming off of a 15u All State honor from last summer playing up a grade.
Rugby Ryken (5’10 PG) of Yankton. The court vision, toughness, game IQ for a young player, all of it has Ryken playing a big role on a state contender his freshman year. Young man simply has more in the tank than a lot of older players leading to longer possessions of solid defense and one of the better transition pushes you will see in the state.
Steele Morgan (6’3 PF) of Mitchell. Morgan is one the stronger low post players in his grade right now and he’s using that strength to put a lot of big numbers up on JV plus help some on the varsity here and there as well.
Owen Cass (6’1 SG) of Sturgis Brown. Cass is a part of a quality group of 2023s at Sturgis that are making a big impact on several sports this school year. Cass has earned a depended role on varsity after a quality freshman football year on varsity.
