Here is a look at the top standout Class of 2020 and 2021 performers from Saturday’s action at the Whitfield District:
2020
Sam Richardson 6’5″ Hancock: The standout wing put in an easy and efficient day’s work by scoring 35 points in less than three quarters before taking a seat in the Tigers blowout victory over Bayless. After surpassing the 2,000-point plateau for his career earlier this week, Richardson kept the scoring pace going on Saturday with transition dunks, pull up 3-pointers, offensive rebounds and drives to the bucket. He is averaging 28 points a game for a reason.
Tyree Wesley 6’6″ DuBourg: The active post player scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Cavaliers to a victory over Principia. He did most of his damage in the first half when he scored 14 points and helped stake DuBourg to its big lead. His activity around the basket was high as he scored on post moves and offensive rebounds. He had a nice touch around the basket as he used the backboard very well.
Nick Mays 6’5″ Maplewood: The versatile wing player was an immediate impact player in January after becoming eligible. He had a strong first half in the Blue Devils loss to Lutheran South as he scored 15 points before being plagued by foul trouble. He displayed a great knack for putting the ball in the basket as he scored on twisting drives and short jumpers from all kinds of angles. His size enabled him to shoot over smaller defenders as he absorbed contact and still got buckets.
Jeremiah Williams 6’4″ Hancock: A physical combo forward who scored 16 points in the Tigers easy victory over Bayless. He scored his first eight points on straight line drives to the basket when he was easily able to get to the basket. He is physical around the basket not only as a scorer, but as an excellent rebounder.
Malik Stewart 6’0″ Maplewood: A cross country/track and field standout who also excels on the basketball court. He is a volume shooting guard who creates a lot of his offense off the dribble. He did come off a screen to hit a nice jumper early, but much of his offense came from knocking down jumpers off the dribble and attacking the basket on coast to coast drives. He finished his career averaging more than 27 points a game, which was among the best in the St. Louis area this season.
William Cahalane 6’9″ Valley Park: A long and lanky forward who I saw for the first time and was impressed with what he showed against Whitfield, especially in the first half when he scored 10 of his 14 points. When he was able to catch the ball inside against a swarming defense, he was able to keep the ball up to shoot a very effective turnaround jumper in the lane.
2021
Jack Lawson 6’6″ Lutheran South: The versatile combo forward scored 17 points and controlled the boards in the Crusaders’ victory over Maplewood. He is an excellent facilitator who you can run your offense through with his ability to pass the ball from the high post. He can score in the post well and did a nice job of diving in from the top of the key to get easy buckets around the basket. He is also a very good perimeter shooter, although he didn’t need it on Saturday to get the job done.
Jonathan Prange 6’3″ Lutheran South: The active wing scored a game-high 28 points against Maplewood. His combination of skills and a high motor caused problems for the defense throughout the game. He was constantly attacking the basket while also getting to the offensive boards and moving without the ball with good cuts. He also did his fair share of ball handling against the pressure defense.
Isaiah Alexander 6’2″ Whitfield: The slashing wing player scored 10 points in the Warriors victory over Valley Park. He is a very active player who makes a lot of things happen without having to have the ball in his hands very much. He will drive to the basket effectively as well as attack the offensive boards.
Jackson Chatman 6’1″ DuBourg: A young sharpshooter who came off the bench to score 14 points in the Cavs victory over Principia. When he enters the game, he is ready to shoot the ball and provide instant offense. He knocked down three 3-pointers and displayed some excellent range from well behind the line.
Loubert Ladouceur 6’4″ Bayless: An athletic combo forward who just started playing basketball this year after playing hockey for much of his youth. He is one of the most athletic players I watched during the day. He had perhaps the most eye-popping play of the game against Hancock when he drove baseline and threw down a tough reverse dunk that got everyone’s attention. He also displayed some nice shot-blocking ability.
