With a roster featuring six seniors and a tough schedule ahead of them, the Scorpions are in a spot to potentially open some eyes in the Class 2A field.
Leading the way has been three standout seniors, who pose a threat for any of Class 2A’s top teams.
Charles Winston, Forward
To use a cliche metaphor, if DHPH was a car, Winston would be the engine.
The senior provides instant energy as he thrives off the defensive side of the ball, especially after leading Class 2A in steals a year ago with seven a game.
But Winston has proven he can provide in pretty much every area on the basketball court, whether that is going up high for a board or knocking down a jumper or shutting down an opposing team’s best player.
“I expect big things from (Winston), I set the bar high and so far, he’s met those expectations,” DHPH coach Roger Martinez said. “But we’re only halfway there, we have a long way to go and he’s going to be the biggest part. If he keeps doing what he’s doing, I like our chances.”
The Scorpions go as Winston goes, part of why they fell short in Class 2A regionals a season ago after he broke his arm in the district tournament.
This season, Winston is averaging 15.6 points of game, most of which come from attacking the rim and finishing or strong of getting the job done at the free throw line.
Martinez said calls from colleges have started to roll in about Winston as they try to get the senior forward more exposure heading into the postseason.
Isaiah Trujillo, Guard
While Winston might be the guy opposing team’s look at first, Trujillo isn’t someone to overlook either with 16.3 points per game.
Trujillo has made 24 3-pointers on the season and isn’t afraid to launch one from a couple feet beyond the line and nail it.
Having that outside presence allows for Winston to go to work inside and kick out to Trujillo for an open look.
And like almost every player on DHPH, Trujillo gets it done on defense as the front court of the Scorpions becomes scary when Winston and Trujillo come up to attack an opposing team’s guards.
Xavier Gomez, Guard
Trujillo has certainly been a sharpshooter, but Gomez has been the best of the bunch with a team-high 17.1 points per game and 26 made 3-pointers.
Gomez can sit on the outside with Trujillo, giving the Scorpions two options on kick outs or designed pick plays to get it back out to them.
While Trujillo works more primarily from the outside, Gomez has shown he’s not afraid to mix it up inside a little bit as well and grab a board or two.
Plus, you add him into the defense mix and guards have extremely limited options in the half court with Gomez, Trujillo and Winston all flying around looking for steals.
