As discussed in our preview of the state tournament there were quite a few games that we expected to go down to the wire, and that’s exactly what happened with those matchups with games going down to the final moments. Let’s take a look at some of the standout performances from players around the state on Tuesday night.
Terry Sanford and Northside-Jax had a back and forth matchup with Terry Sanford getting the win on the road and advancing to the next round. Terry Sanford Sophomore Guard Davis Molnar led the team with 24 points on the night, which is what the Bulldogs will need if they hope to continue to advance.
Riverside-Williamston Sophomore Wing Avion Pinner put up some monster numbers in their first round win over Columbia, dropping 37 Points and pulling down 15 Rebounds. Pinner is a player that D1 programs should already be watching closely, he has legit D1 size and skillset for a wing player and is only getting better.
Lumberton HS pulled off the win over South Central HS after getting another big performance from Unsigned Senior Guard Jordan McNeill who scored 25 Points for the Pirates. McNeill is one of the better guards that is still available and not only has some perimeter skills but also does an outstanding job rebounding the ball from the guard spot.
Eastern Guilford Junior Guard Kadyn Dawkins led his team with 20 Points in a blowout win of Jacksonville HS which will set his squad up with a matchup against a solid South Johnston group. Dawkins is one of those smaller guards that can flat out get it done, he has a nice IQ for the game and plays with a high level of toughness every night.
Pender HS got a big time performance from Sophomore Jakwon Moore In their matchup with Camden HS. Moore went for 32 points and 11 rebounds to lead his team to a blowout win which sets them up for a big time matchup with 2019 Eastern Regional Champion Henderson Collegiate.
Laney HS picked up 13 points from their sharp shooting Junior Guard Makoa Surigao and a win to move on to the second round. Guard play is always important during tourney time and Suriago could be a very valuable piece to the puzzle as they look to make a nice run.
South Johnston Unsigned Senior CJ Ray has continued to play at an extremely high level this year and Tuesday night was no different. Ray went for 29 Points and led his team to a victory that would set them up with a matchup on the road tomorrow night with Eastern Guilford.
