Continue ReadingCentral Jersey Group 4 should be extremely exciting as the top teams have shown flaws as of late. Middletown South lost at home to Mater Dei, New Brunswick to Old Bridge and Marlboro gave up 114 points to Toms River North. The group is filled with good players who have flown under the radar. A good run in the state tournament would change that narrative and there are numerous players capable of carrying their teams. Here are the under the radar difference-makers in Central Jersey Group 4.
Alex Ratner, 6’0 CG Marlboro 2020
Sophomore Jack Seidler was also an option here, but Ratner gets the nod because of his scoring prowess. The Shore Conference’s leading scorer is capable of scoring 30 points on any given night, including a 35-point performance against Toms River North. Ratner can finish around the basket, make tough layups through contact and knock down perimeter jump shots. He is a good rebounder and capable of running the offense as a point guard. The Mustangs are looking for a deep run in Central Jersey Group 4 and Ratner will be the reason why.
Ahyan Brown-Miller, 5’9 PG New Brunswick 2020
Rutgers football commit Tahjay Moore has been a force down low all season, but Brown-Miller runs the show for the Zebras. The 5’9 guard is a blur in the open floor who excels at setting his teammates up. Brown-Miller can knock down three-pointers in bunches and finishes tough baskets around the basket. He is an elite on-ball defender with great instincts and quick hands. Brown-Miller and Moore have great chemistry and are looking to carry New Brunswick in states.
Luke Albrecht, 5’11 PG Middletown South 2021
The Eagles have been one of the top teams in the Shore Conference led by senior James Anderson. Albrecht may not be a big-time scorer, but he runs the offense for Middletown South. He is good with the ball in hands and rarely makes mistakes. Albrecht takes the ball to the basket strong and is a solid on-ball defender. Middletown South has aspirations of winning Central Jersey Group 4 and Albrecht will be the key for a deep run.
Justin Carbone, 6’4 SG South Brunswick 2020
The Vikings have been hot as of late as they are currently on an eight-game winning streak. Carbone has been a high level scorer all season alongside classmate Devin Strickland. The 6’4 senior has a nice shooting stroke and is unafraid to take the ball to the basket. Carbone moves well off the ball and is an underrated defender. South Brunswick has the chance to have a special run in the state tournament behind the play of Carbone and Strickland.
Chirs Rubayo, 6’8 PF Montgomery 2021
Ryan Curry has had a breakout sophomore campaign, but Rubayo has emerged as a high-level big man. He has range that extends past the three-point line and handles the ball well on the perimeter. Rubayo can score over either shoulder down low and knows how to finish through contact. He battles for rebounds in the paint and is an underrated post defender. Montgomery needs Rubayo to be at his best if the Cougars want to pull off an upset or two.
