Gideon came in with a 21-4 record and riding a 16-game winning streak while Campbell (15-7) was celebrating its Senior Night. Gideon just won the Tri-County Conference Tournament championship while Gideon won a share of the Bootheel Conference championship.
The two teams battled on even terms during a low-scoring first half which saw Campbell take a 21-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Camels went on a surge in the third quarter to push their lead to 10 points and eventually came away with a 53-39 victory to end Gideon’s big winning streak.
It was the regular-season finale for both teams as they will enter district playoff competition next week. Gideon is the No. 3 seed at the Class 1, District tournament at Bell City while Campbell is hosting the Class 4, District 2 tournament as the No. 2 seed.
Here is a look at the Five Stars from Thursday night’s Campbell-Gideon game:
No. 1 Star: Blake Fowler (Campbell)
The 2021 point guard scored a game-high 27 points and dominated in the second half in which he scored 20 points. His hostile takeover of the game started with the last three possessions of the third quarter when he scored on a drive, a mid-range jumper and a long 3-pointer to stretch the Camels’ lead to 10 points. He salted the game away with 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. He has nice handles which enable him to create his own shot, whether he’s getting into the lane or pulling up from long distance.
No. 2 Star: Sam Williams (Gideon)
The 5’11” 2021 point guard scored a game-high 12 points with most of them coming in the first half. He is a creative slashing guard who does an excellent job finishing at the rim. He is very good in the transition game and he was also very effective at attacking the basket off the dribble or off of hard cuts. He is constantly in motion to he is tough to keep up with.
No. 3 Star: Jacob Vines (Campbell)
The only senior on Campbell’s team had a very successful Senior Night as he scored seven points and played an excellent all-around floor game for the Camels. He is the kind of player that every coach would love to have in a winning equation because he is active and always around the ball in the action. He is a good rebounder who will also get steals and get to loose balls while always being in the right spot on defense.
No. 4 Star: Gage Stover (Gideon)
The 2020 guard joined teammate Sam Williams in double figures with 11 points on the evening. He is a solid ball handler who does a good job of keeping the ball moving on offense. He had some nice takes to the basket while knocking down a nice 3-pointer in the third quarter.
No. 5 Star: Kaden Siebert (Campbell)
The 2021 guard came off the bench to score five points and provide solid play throughout the game. He hit a big 3-point right in the middle of the Camels third-quarter surge when they took control of the game. He rebounded well while being a reliable ball handler who did a nice job of taking care of the ball in the fourth quarter when the Camels to running clock.
