While D1 and D2 kids tend to be more athletic and flashy, D3 and D4 guys tend to focus more on hard work and physicality. This is the reason why I chose to attend Butler and Piqua Sectional action Thursday and Saturday. The 5 guys below caught my eye multiple times as they made the right plays and were gritty. IN fact, 3 of them are freshmen meaning you’ll be hearing more of them over the next 3 years. Below are my top Sectional performers.
Isaiah Edwards (2023) Dayton Christian- Brings a unique physicality for a freshman. Utilized the pump fake and was able to finish through traffic. On the defensive end, he was an incredible rebounder, grabbing with 2 hands and bringing toughness when boxing out and holding the basketball after a rebound. Very intriguing prospect that could make some noise as his career continues.
Skyler Piper (2021) Fairlawn- Built extremely well and impressed as an inside-out PF. Utilized his size on the interior on the defensive end with a high reach and long arms. Showed he can score from multiple levels, and especially was tough to defend on the block. He backed down his defender using his large frame and got good shots off as a result.
Kleyton Maschino (2020) Covington- A hard-nosed competitor; hustled on both ends of the floor, getting out in transition on the offensive end and diving on the floor for loose balls on the defensive end. While he’s arguably the best scorer for the Buccs, he is unselfish and quick to distribute the basketball to open guys. Most impressive to me was his willingness to take charges on the block as well as on the perimeter.
Ben Major (2023) Troy Christian- 6th man for the Eagles, solid sized big with a high level rebounding ability. Goes up with two hands and secures the basketball. Has some work to do on the offensive end as he struggled with the basketball in his hand, but brings physicality on the block on the defensive end.
Camdyn Reese (2023) Jackson Center- Very strong build for a freshman. Sits down on the defensive end and showed he can guard multiple positions. Versatile on the defensive end and strict to the fundamentals. Plays defense with a wide stance and rebounds the basketball with 2 hands. Offensively has the confidence to attack from either side, but must work on his left hand finishing. Overall has a high ceiling.
