There’s been plenty that we have recognized over the season on Prep Hoops, but now we’re going to take a look at the guys who are having a breakout sophomore campaign, continuing with 6 from the Northern Virginia area.
Cavan Reilly | 6’2” WG | Middleburg
Many expected Reilly coming into the season to be the designated shooter that created space and gave room for Middleburg’s more experienced and dynamic guards to be able to operate, but the more you watch him the more you realize he’s not just a shooter. Reilly is a guy who has great instincts on both ends that allows him to make passes and plays for others as well as get his hands on a lot of passes on the defensive end. He’s an underrated athlete that can play above the rim, he’s shown that he can handle against pressure and not turn it over and of course he’s shown that he can also flat out shoot the rock from deep.
Paul Lewis | 6’2” WG | Bishop O’Connell
The younger brother of JMU star and former O’Connell standout Matt Lewis is starting to make a name for himself after his breakout performance against Mater Dei (CA) on the biggest of stages at the HoopHall Classic in Massachusetts. Lewis has the ability to make shots in a number of ways whether it’s off the catch or off the bounce, from midrange or from deep and whether he’s open or it’s a contested look. He has good length and is likely still growing and should fill out as he does, and they way he looks now he’ll be someone to watch for coaches moving forward.
Kyle Honore | 5’10” PG | Potomac
Honore is the son of Head Coach Keith Honore and he plays with the poise and intelligence you would expect from the child of one of the most successful coaches in the state. Honore is dynamic off the bounce and makes great decisions in the pick-and-roll, he can get downhill and get in the lane where he can finish in a number of ways and he makes everyone on the team better. He’s a natural leader who sets the tone on both ends and will be one of the better point guards in the area moving forward.
Michael Henderson | 5’6” PG | TC Williams
While he isn’t the biggest guy on the floor, there aren’t many players that can stay in front of Henderson and he’s able to make every other person on the floor better with his feel and passing ability. The pint sized guard is terrific in pick-and-roll situations, he has a great handle that is shifty and he changes directions well and he’s able to score over taller defenders when he needs to. He’s a tone setter on both ends as he’s a good on ball defender as well.
Nate Pabis | 6’3” WG/WF | Flint Hill
Pabis is a big guard that has a mix of physicality and skill to his game that makes him hard to match up with at this level. The 6’3” wing moves well without the basketball and can flat out stroke it from deep, which has allowed him to put up some big numbers in quite a few games this season. He’s a guy who knows how to play the game as he makes good decisions and winning plays, and his ability to stretch the floor and knock down shots makes him one of the best sophomores in the NOVA area.
Zach Bolgert | 6’6” PF | Fairfax Christian
Fairfax Christian has come out of nowhere to surprise a lot of people as one of the best VISAA D3 programs in the state this year, and sophomore big man Zach Bolgert is one of the main reasons. The 6’6” forward is a walking mismatch at his size as a guy who can stretch the floor on the offensive end and own the paint on the defensive end. He can make shots out to the three-point line, he can rebound on both ends and he plays hard every time he’s on the floor as well.
