A poor performance in a tournament game could send a team packing, while a strong game could spring board a deep state run. The Bergen County Jamboree is no different as many players step up with huge performances. Here are top stock risers from the Bergen County Jamboree.
Derrick Bueno, 6’6 PF Paramus Catholic 2021
Fellow junior Niko Ruffin deserves recognition for his three-point shooting display, but Bueno was a load down low. The 6’6 junior was almost impossible to box out down low as he gobbled up 15 rebounds. Bueno showcased good footwork in the post and even showcased his range on a deep three-pointer in the first half.
He brought the ball up the court at times against Dwight Morrow and had several coast-to-coast layups. Bueno had a great chase-down block in the second half, showing his motor and athleticism. Ruffin and Bueno are a dynamic inside-out combo that could give Ramsey problems in the quarterfinals.
Julian Brown, 5’11 PG Bergen Catholic 2022
Notre Dame commit Matt Zona was the most dominant player, but Brown got the game going with a corner three-pointer. The sophomore guard dropped a team-high 21 points and was in attack mode all game. Brown was always hunting for his shot, but made a couple of nice passes in transition.
His defense was a big part of the Crusaders’ success as his on-ball pressure forced several Hasbrouck Heights’ turnovers. His ability to get out in the open floor alongside classmate Will Richardson makes Bergen Catholic an extremely dangerous team. Brown is one of the more underrated sophomores in New Jersey, but more performances like that should put him on the radar.
Richard Machado, 5’10 PG Saddle River Day 2023
The Rebels were unable to upset Ramsey, but Machado had a performance to remember. The freshman guard had a team-high 22 points as he could not miss from behind the arc. Machado knocked down six three-pointers in the game, including a pair over Cornell commit Sean Hansen‘s closeout.
He showcased solid composure on the ball and was able to get by his defender at times. If Machado is able to play like this in the state tournament, than that takes pressure of off Connor Cyran. Saddle River Day fought hard against Ramsey and Machado raised the eyebrows of many people in Bergen County.
Jaden Quinerly, 6’0 PG Ramsey 2020
Hansen was unstoppable down low, but it was Quinerly’s offense in the first half that sparked Ramsey. The 6’0 senior was unguardable off the bounce at times as he sliced through Saddle River Day’s defense. Quinerly had several nifty layups around the basket and finished through contact on multiple occasions.
He made several nice passes throughout the game, while his on-ball pressure forced several turnovers. Hansen is the go-to guy for Ramsey, but Quinerly is also capable of dropping 20 points on any given night. He is an underrated guard in North Jersey and should get more recognition with more performances like that.
Aidan Kehoe, 6’9 C Pascak Hills 2021
Senior Jason Schulman may have lead the Cowboys in scoring, but Kehoe is why they won the game. The junior center disrupted numerous shots around the rim with his timing and length as Ramapo struggled to score when he was in the paint. Kehoe hustled for offensive rebounds and rarely took a play off on both ends.
His shooting form was solid on his free throws and made smart decisions when the ball was in his hands. Kehoe had a solid all-around game against Ramapo, but will need to step his game up against Bergen Catholic for Pascack Hills to advance in the Bergen County Jamboree.
