While early round contests can, at times, fly under the radar, several athletes across the County stepped up to the challenge in a big way. Here are the standouts from the first round of the Bergen County Jamboree.
Kunga Tsering, Junior, Hasbrouck Heights
The first-round matchup between No. 1 seed Bergen Catholic and No. 17 seed Hasbrouck Heights wasn’t pretty, but that doesn’t mean the Aviators didn’t have any standouts. Kunga Tsering, a 6’6 Junior for the Aviators, definitely made a statement, posting an impressive 22 points and six rebounds. Scoring at and around the basket often, Tsering was the driving force for an offense that was often stagnant against the tough Bergen Catholic team. While the matchup wasn’t close, evident by the 83-46 victory for the Crusaders, Tsering proved he can hold his own against top competitors.
Max Pernetti, Senior, Ramapo
While the No. 8 Ramapo Raiders couldn’t quite overcome an early deficit against the No. 9 ranked Pascack Hills Cowboys, the best player on the court throughout the matchup proved to be Max Pernetti. Pernetti, a Senior big man for the Raiders, proved to be virtually unstoppable, posting an impressive 27 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Scoring at all levels, Pernetti also netted two three-pointers, keeping the Raiders afloat in what eventually ended up being a losing effort.
Sean Hansen, Senior, Ramsey
The No. 4 ranked Ramsey Rams put on a show against the No. 13 ranked Saddle River Day. Spearheaded by an offensive explosion from Sean Hansen and Jaden Quinerly, the Rams were on point in every way imaginable. Hansen completely dominated this matchup posting an eye-opening 29 points and 13 rebounds. Also, Hansen showed range making two three-pointers and making 11 free throws. Hansen proved to be too much for Saddle River Day and helped Ramsey pace to a convincing victory.
Jaden Quinerly, Senior, Ramsey
While Hansen dominated, his teammate Jaden Quinerly was equally good in a somewhat one-sided matchup. Possessing an ability to get to his favorite spots on the court, Quinerly scored 29 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Derrick Bueno, Junior, Paramus Catholic
One of the most consistent players in Bergen County all year, Derrick Bueno continued to showcase his unmatched ability to score and rebound the basketball at a high level during the first round of action against Dwight-Morrow. Bueno, leading both teams in points and rebounds, posted 23 baskets and grabbed 15 boards en route to a dominant 89-60 victory. For anyone who has paid attention to the Paladins this season, it’s clear Bueno is one of the Counties best.
