Florence steps it up in the second half and defeats Bob Jones 69-57 in the first round of the Area Tournament. Bob Jones has been eliminated and Florence will take on Austin on Friday night. Dee Beckwith led the way for the Falcons with 28 points and Jadan Coleman led the Patriots scoring 22 points. Below are 6 impact players.
Jalen Meyers, Bob Jones: Jalen has been a force to be reckoned with all year. In the first round of the Area tournament, his presence was almost non-existent. Jalen had a rough night shooting the ball and really couldn’t get anything going offensively. He appears to be a momentum player, for example, when he’s hot, he’s HOT. When he’s not on, though, he struggles to still contribute where he needs to. His frustration late in the game was apparent. He sets great screens and very active on defense altering shots and making it difficult for the offense. He had a ferocious dunk to start the third quarter and a big two handed slam in transition. As his teammate, Jadan Coleman, got hot in the second half, there should have been a lot of pick and roll or pick and pop between the two stars to prevent the Falcons from pulling away. Jalen is going to have a really good summer and continue to get better.
Jaden Webster, Florence: Jaden quietly contributed 15 points helping his team advance to the next round. He cuts through the lane with purpose, looking to find the soft spot in the defense. He showed amazing heart and hustle by chasing down a meaningless loose ball and trying to save it as he dove into his bench. It’s the little things like that and understanding that each possession is crucial that will help Florence as they progress into the playoffs. Jaden showed a very effective hop step in the lane that allowed him to split two defenders for a very easy finish.
Chandler Porter, Bob Jones: Chandler is the heart and soul of the Bob Jones team. His energy and passion is relentless and contagious. He’s very focal from the point guard position, but able to get his team into their offensive sets and execute. He’s seen talking to teammates after a miscommunication or a bad pass. He has a very explosive first step that allows him to get to the cup. He’s not afraid to challenge bigger defenders. He drives right into the chest of defenders and forces them to either make a play defensively or foul him. Being so quick, he opened up the floor and took advantage of a few three pointers.
Jameris Lee, Florence: Jameris did his job as point guard and did it well. He remained calm and patient as the defense over-aggressively guarded him. He used that against them and attacked the basket. He has a good pull up jumper at the second level over the outstretched arms of taller defenders. He had an amazing bounce pass from half court through the defense to his slashing teammate. He took the bait of a perimeter shot fake allowing an easy basket. Close out low and aggressively, but don’t jump. He finished with 9 points.
Jadan Coleman, Bob Jones: Jadan had a weird night. In the first half, he was almost non-existent. He took a big charge in the second quarter, but besides that, not much. Everyone knows the moment he walks in the gym, he’s in his shooting range. He missed an emphatic dunk in the second half and should have just taken the easy layup and points. He needed to dictate the offense more. In the fourth quarter, he got hot and scored 13 points. He was the best shooter on the floor, but sometimes tried to do too much. He was at his best when he came off down screens and hit big threes. There’s no need to be Superman. Find what you do best and do it with excellence.
Dee Beckwith, Florence: This Florence team will go as far as Dee Beckwith is willing to take them. The two-sport Tennessee commit was all over this game. If he saw a size mismatch, he took the defender to the post. He had strong hands on helpside defense, forcing a turnover. He’s extremely athletic and able to adjust his shot in midair. It seemed he was always following the play and getting big rebounds. With 5:23 to go in the fourth, he hit a big three plus the foul. The next possession he hit another wing three pointer and that was the beginning of the end for the Patriots. His team will need every bit of him as the playoffs continue and he will continue to deliver.
