Continue ReadingMitty and Bellarmine squared off for the CCS Open Title game at Stanford’s Maple Pavilion in Palo Alto CA. The Bells got off to a good start with a 9-2 run to open the game and lead the first quarter 12-7. Both teams settled in being patient on offense and playing stingy defense. At the half the score was 21-15 Bells. In the 3rd quarter Mitty went on a 10-0 run to take the lead in the game, 32-27 after 3 quarters. The Bells struggled to convert shots they had been making earlier. It was a low scoring contest with both teams locked in on defense, making shots was a key down the stretch. Mitty was able to get a few breakout layups off of Bell turnovers in the 4th. Mitty with about 3 minutes left Mitty spread the floor, used good patience to get the Bells to extended the defense and open the lane for one of Mitty’s quicker guard to attack the paint. Mitty would go on to win the game and the title 44-41. Here’s My take.
Mitty’s Coach Kennedy wasted no time inserting 6’7 Nigel Burris 2021 into the game when saw Bells rebounding advantage early. Burris a transfer has accepted his roll of coming off the bench. This might have been his best showing, he drove the lane for a dunk. He was active on the boards and clogging the lanes. His scoring is down, but he contributed to this victory in other ways, he finished with 9 points, 3 rebs.
Mitty’s guards have been the main stay all season for the Monarchs Mike Mitchell 2021 (Pepperdine) continued to find ways to contribute when he’s not scoring a lot . He continued to play tenacious defense on the wings and stop the penetration after picking up two early fouls in the first quarter. He hit a nice elbow jumper and a key 3 down the stretch to finish with 8 points. Marcus Greene and Mason Ryan two unsigned Seniors have shown good calmness and leadership in these big games. They play good ball in the 4th quarter, and it always seems to be one of them that does something big that secures victory in tight contests. Greene finished with 8 points. He’s a quality defender. Ryan had 7 points 4 rebs. He plays a key roll down the stretch.
Bellarmine’s 6’6 unsigned Senior Ian Elam has been on fire the last few games for the Bells. When he’s knocking down 3’s, he takes his game to another level. He had two big ones in this game. His ability to score forced Mitty to make some adjustment on the wings. He was aggressive down on the block for points and putbacks. He finished as the games top scorer 15 points, 6 rebs. The Bells other big, 6’9 2021 Ryan Kiachian had a good first half. He made his presence known early and often with 5 points 4 rebs and 2 blks. He continued to play good defense against Mitty’s bigs down the stretch. He’ll continue to be a key player for the Bells. 10 points 4 rebs 2 blks.
Mitty wins it fourth CCS Title and will get a home game in the Regional State Playoffs, while the Bells might have to hit the road next week. Both teams will be a hand full for any opponent they come up against.
