Tommy Murr, Lindsay Lane: Tommy continues his incredible career with a Tuesday victory against Woodville to advance to the Northeast Regional at Jacksonville State. He scored a season-low 26 points, but added 6 steals and 7 assists. Murr is averaging 42.6 points a game. With this game, he broke his previous record for points in a season with 1,450 and that’ll continue to grow the further his team goes.
Kam Woods, Pinson Valley: The 6A defending state championships took care of business against Shades Valley on Tuesday 80-64. Phenom Kam Woods put on a clinic scoring 45 points along with 7 steals and 5 rebounds. He’ll have a tough matchup on Friday against #8 Oxford at Jacksonville State.
Taye Fields, Lee-Huntsville: Taye had a pretty good night finishing with 19 points and leading the way for the Generals in the loss to Oxford. It wasn’t his best night, but he did what he could. He’s an athlete first and foremost and it’s inevitable. He had the task of guarding Zondrick Garrett, the South Alabama commit. He did a good job of fundamentally boxing him out early and not trying to out jump him. Taye stepped up and took a big charge for his team. He has a pretty good pull up jump shot in the midrange. He had a good fake on the perimeter and then a back cut, receiving a beautiful dime from Kaleb Brown. Taye also played good, textbook defense.
Dane Harding, Albertville: Dane led the #10 Albertville Aggies in an upset over #2 Mae Jemison. The UAH commit did a little bit of everything scoring 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. He helped control the pace against a very good and fast paced Jemison team.
Roc Taylor, Oxford: Roc led the way in scoring for the #8 Yellow Jackets with 19 points. He really works the high post well. He is able to shoot well from 15 feet, but also distribute to Zondrick Taylor on the post. He played great denial defense of Kaleb Brown. Kaleb is one of the best players in the state and deserved Roc’s best effort on defense. He was able to shoot off balance and finish well. He could fall away and the post and score at a high level. Several times he had beautiful touch passes for assists to his teammates. If he and Zondrick ran the pick and roll together effectively and consistently, no one could defend it.
Brody Peebles, Hartselle: Brody scored his 2,000 point through his first three years to lead Hartselle over Columbia 75-53. He finished with 35 points and 4 steals and will look to build on that even more. Hartselle will move on to Regionals at Wallace State for the first time since 2003.
Zondrick Garrett, Oxford: Zondrick had a monster showing for the Yellow Jackets. He scored 17 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and swatted 4 shots. From the start of the game, he made his presence known with a left handed jump hook. Every shot that came in the paint, he contested and altered it. He was extremely aggressive, either with put back dunks or help side defense blocking shots. His length allows him to defend in every situation even if he is switched on a pick and roll.
Ty Smith, Muscle Shoals: Big time players make big time plays. It always seemed like Ty Smith was making the big play. He was great at finishing through contact. He could finish from either side of the basket and attack with either hand. He could alter his shot in midair if necessary. He was great at anticipating the passing lanes and getting big steals. Every time Cullman got close, he pulled the Trojans farther away. He led all scorers with 21 points.
Mikey McIntosh, Muscle Shoals: Mikey started the game off hot on Tuesday against Cullman. He went straight to the post where he knew he had a mismatch. He didn’t have the look he wanted, but passed beautifully when the double team came. With 2:15 remaining in the game, he put the nail in the coffin driving down main street and finishing with an emphatic dunk to the home crowd’s delight. He’s going to have to shine at Wallace State if his team wants to advance further. He finished with 15 points.
