Topeka’s Stars:
Da’Vonshai Harden is a physical specimen. The 6-foot-2 guard overpowered just about everyone on the court en route to 18 points – just what you would expect from a football star.
King Sutton had a couple of game-changing dunks, and finished with 17. He also showed quickness to defend out to the arc, and attempted a couple of three-pointers.
Junction City’s Stars:
Qua’vez Humphreys brings about all the size Junction City has at 6-foot-4. But his ability with the crossover dribble and to finish drives was impressive. He scored nine buckets, almost all from close range, where his acrobatics were highlight-reel worthy.
Howard Johnson had been scoring at an impressive rate, but he struggled to find open looks from the arc. He did finish with 13, going 6-6 from the line.
Key role players:
Jalen Smith, junior, Topeka High:
Smith got to the rim with ease and made the play of the night – an off-the-backboard alley-oop to a trailing Sutton punctuated the Trojan victory. Smith finished with 10.
Geivonnii Williams, junior, Topeka High:
Williams is a 6-foot-1 rugged guard. He shoots it very well, but his hard-nosed defense and fiery competitiveness makes him a standout. Like Harden, Williams is a football player who brings physicality to the court. He tallied 8 against the Blue Jays.
Austin Smith, junior, Junction City:
Smith came off the bench to provide fearless drives and a threat from the perimeter. Smith played about half the game, but finished with 8 points.
