Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Brody Whitaker – 6’2 2021 SG – Greencastle: Whitaker probably had the best weekend out of any high school player in the state. He had a career high 47 points, joined the 1000 point club, and broke the school record in points. This prospect can get buckets all day. Not only has Whitaker had a great individual year, his team Greencastle is currently 10-4. Watch for this 2021 shooter to have another good weekend.
Justin Fickling– 6’3 2020 SG – South Knox: Fickling is one of the more “under the radar” seniors this year. He is a pretty athletic guard that has some nice moves to the rim. Does not really play too much on the outside but does a good job in creating his own shot inside the arc. South Knox has got a pretty big weekend when they take on both Linton and Evansville Reitze. This is a perfect opportunity for Fickling to show that he is just as good as anyone.
Robert Ferrell – 6’4 2020 SG – McCutcheon: Ferrell is one of the best SGs that is still available. He is a pretty solid shooter and his length is what helps him. McCutcheon as a team has had an okay season but have showed signs of breaking out. They have a tough game this weekend against Lafayette Jeff but this gives Ferrell a great opportunity to have a monster game.
3 Teams
Jeffersonville (4A): The Red Devils were stunned this past weekend as Bedford North Lawrence came into their home and beat them. Yes, that was a surprise but I still believe that Jeffersonville is still the favorites to come out of that Sectional. This weekend provides no better opportunity for them as they play a Southridge team that does not have the same talent level. Let us see if the Red Devils can bounce back from their shocking loss. Look for Tre Coleman and Will Lovings-Watts to get their squad back on track.
Munster (4A): The Mustangs have been on a rampage since losing to Hammond on Dec. 6th. They have won 14 straight and there looks to be no sign of them slowing down. They do however have a interesting matchup on Thursday as they face a really good Griffith team. I expect to see Luka Balac and Munster take care of business this week however and continue their winning-streak.
West Washington (1A): After starting off so hot this year, the Senators have cooled-down and have lost 3 straight. Their still is plenty of time for them to get their act together before the post-season comes. They could start that off this week by knocking off two pretty good teams in Crawford County and Scottsburg. This team does have the talent to get a hot-streak going.
3 Matchups
Barr-Reeve (1A) at Northeast Dubois (1A) – Feb 8, 2:30 pm: This is a battle between two of 1A’s top teams. Dubois is currently on a 2-game losing streak and beating a dominant team like Barr-Reeve would give them a big boost. However, Curt Hopf and the Vikings are not about to get their 2nd loss of the season if they can help it. I expect this one to be fairly close but for Reeve to escape with the win. Do not be shocked to see an upset though.
Crispus Attucks (4A) vs Fort Wayne Blackhawk (2A) – Feb 8, 2:30 pm: This is a very interesting matchup I feel. Attucks has been one of the top teams in 4A and Blackhawk is the best team in 2A at the moment. This game has got a couple of Indiana’s top players in Sincere McMahon and Caleb Furst. Though Blackhawk is one of the better teams in the state, I feel as though Attucks has a more talented team.
Delta (3A) at Mississinewa (3A) – Feb 8, 12:30 pm: This is 3A’s top game for this week. Both squads are a combined 24-6 and have been playing real well as of late. Delta’s Brady Hunt has had a pretty good junior year and Anthony Horton has been a good leader for Mississinewa. Delta’s team is tough to beat but I give the slight edge to Mississinewa just for the home-court advantage. Should be a good one folks.
