1A/2A
The Henderson Collegiate Pride took home the North Central Athletic Conference Tournament title with a 64-52 victory over Voyager Academy. Junior wing Akhiris Holden nearly finished with a triple-double in the game with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Junior guard Javonte Waverly finished with a team-high 18 points, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists. Queens-bound guard Kalib Matthews finished with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. They’re a No. 6 seed and host the River Mill Jaguars as the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs ramp up on Tuesday.
South Granville Vikings kept their perfect season intact with a convincing 100-74 victory over the Granville Central Panthers. The Vikings enter the NCHSAA 2A Tournament as a No. 1 seed in the East after the victory that saw three players finish with over 20 points. Bobby Pettiford Jr. nearly posted a triple-double, producing 28 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. He set the tone and teammate Wy’kise Allen followed with 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point land. He also had 12 rebounds. Micah Jones finished with 23 points on 5 made 3-pointers and six assists as well. They’re firing on all cylinders at the right time heading into States.
The Reidsville Rams won the Mid-State Conference Tournament Championship behind 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists from electric guard Breon Pass and 22 points and 10 rebounds from unsigned senior forward Auldon Edwards. The Rams are 23-2 and went 12-0 in conference action heading into the 2A State Playoffs with a No. 4 seed. They’ll be a team to keep an eye on in the East with a talented rotation of players.
The North Davidson Black Knights took home the Central Carolina Conference Tournament crown with a 64-48 victory over Ledford High School. Their junior backcourt of Tedric Jenkins and Jamarien Dalton finished with a combined 47 points to lead the way for the Black Knights. Jenkins put up 26 points as Dalton dropped 21 points in the convincing win for them. They will be 6-seed to keep an eye on in the West region of the 2A State Playoffs.
3A/4A
The Parkland Mustangs completed another victory over the Mount Tabor Trojans with a timely bucket from Camian Shell as time ran down on the clock in the Piedmont Triad Conference title game. Shell finished with 11 points while Omari Bolden led the way with 19 points for the Mustangs in the 54-52 victory. They’re an electric bunch with tons of weapons heading into the State Playoffs. They’re a No. 18 seed in the 3A West region and will travel to face West Rowan in their first game.
The Eastern Guilford Wildcats won the Mid-Piedmont Conference Tournament Championship, completing a perfect conference slate with a 14-0 record, with a 67-53 win over Walter M. Williams High School. Sharpshooting guard Kadyn Dawkins led the way with 20 points while forward Omarion Johnson posted 19 points. Junior wing Kamel Smith also finished with 17 points. The Wildcats enter the 3A East region with a No. 5 seed in the State Playoffs. Don’t be surprised if they surprise a higher-seed on the road.
The Garner Magnet Trojans took home the No. 1 seed in 4A East region after defeating the Apex Friendship Patriots 84-75 in overtime. Christopher Nobles led the way with 26 points as the Trojans won when it mattered the most after splitting the season series. Now with a No. 1 seed, they’ll have homecourt advantage throughout after winning the South Wake Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Leesville Road Pride have found themselves with a No. 2 seed in the 4A East after defeating Millbrook for the second-straight time since the return of Jalen McDonald. It was Carter Whiit though who led the way in the tiebreaker for the Cap 7 Conference Title game with a 34-point performance in 65-60 win. He also had six rebounds and five assists. Jalen McDonald finished with 15 points for Leesville Road as well. They’ll have a bye in the first round before hosting their first State Playoff game on Thursday.
The Panther Creek Catamounts won their second-straight Triangle 8 Conference Tournament title with a 57-43 victory over Riverside-Durham avenging two losses during the regular season.. Daylen Berry and Lenior-Rhyne commit Armon Muldrew finished with 13 points apiece while Dylan Drinkwater finished with 11 points. Despite winning the Tri-8 Title, they are a No. 10 seed in the 4A East region of the State Playoffs. They’ll host South View in the first round.
