Here were 10 observations from the three games I viewed:
#1 Brophy Prep freshman group will help their varsity next year and have many possible future studs.
#2 Three freshman from Brophy Prep stood out in the freshman game.
Malcolm Smith SG 6’2 2023 Brophy Prep
-Thicker scorer who uses body inside to score it. Can shoot it from deep with nice form on his shot. He is very consistent and one of those shots that look good every time. A tough and physical player who passes well.
Conner Ivy SF 6’3 2023 Brophy Prep
A long and very lean wing who can score from inside and out. The lefty just got back from an ACL sprain. He closes out quickly to shooters and just covers a lot of ground on defense. He has a good looking shot and if he can keep developing, he may be their sleeper of a talented freshman group.
Connor Fitzgerald CG 6’1 2023 Brophy Prep
-A cerebral guard who has a nice handle. The lefty can get into the lane and make a play for his teammates. He is a cerebral player that can shoot it but likes to attack with using hesitations and changing speeds. His passing makes his game go.
#3 One freshman stood out from Perry in the freshman game.
Ben Egbo SF 6’2 2023 Perry
-An athletic slasher gets to the basket in very few steps. He absorbs contact and gets fouled or scores it. He covers a lot of ground on defense. He can defend in space and block shots plus rebounds at a good clip.
#4 One soph stood out from Perry in the JV game.
Eli Burland PG 5’9 2022 Perry
-Great feel for the game and highly skilled. He is a very good passer and advance passes better than most do on varsity teams. He is smaller but changes speeds smartly and can shoot it from many different angles.
#5 Three players from Brophy Prep stood out in the JV game.
Arman Madi SF 6’5 2023 Brophy Prep
-One of the more gifted freshman you’ll find. Shoots the three with range and dunks the ball effortlessly. He is an unusually good passer, I was impressed once again how well he saw the court. He can create his own shot and his upside is high.
JP Musselman W 6’5 2022 Brophy Prep
-Bigger guard/wing who can handle it decently and hit from the perimeter. He is very crafty and makes plays for others. He is another that sees plays developing. He has good athletic ability and plays above the rim.
Trey Phillips PF 6’6 2022 Brophy Prep
-Long and lean forward who can spring up to rebound or block shots. He seems to glide around the court and is a pogo stick when he is dunking or rebounding the ball. His upside is obvious and once he adds muscle and little more skill, the sky’s the limit. He just got back from an injury and they are working him back slowly. He is a very fluid athlete.
Varsity game:
#6 Arman Madi is only 3rd player ever to be on varsity as a freshman since Coach Hooten has been there.
#7 The Broncos are turning into a scary match-up in the playoffs and can make a DEEP run.
#8 The Pumas are an inconsistent group but don’t overlook them, since they do have a lot of talent.
#9 The Broncos are now 5-0 since Chew has played.
#10 Here were the Varsity standouts:
Brophy Prep 57 Perry 52
Christian Tucker PG 6’0 2021 Perry
-A quick guard who loves to score it. He is more of a scoring guard then pure PG currently. He can score it from all 3 levels but is best pulling up from mid-range. He likes the floater game and has a nice burst to get by his defender. He does make plays for others and is very fast with the ball up the court.
Jalen Moreland PG 5’6 2020 Perry
-A jet quick scoring PG with good open court speed. The lefty has a nice shot from the 3pt line and seems to be a step faster than every guard on the court. He is skilled, smart and competitive.
Desi Burrage CG 6’0 2021 Brophy Prep
-A tough on ball defender and catch shooter. He defends his man up the length of the court and has a stocky body with great speed. He took a charge on Perry’s big man twice. He was consistent from the corner 3pt line and made two floaters. He is a good passer and will run through a wall for his teammates. He has been their glue guy this year.
Patrick Chew CG/SG 6’3 2022 Brophy Prep
-A tough guard who is a really good passer and defender. He is more of a two guard now, but It wouldn’t shock me to see him becoming a PG in college. He has a high shooting release and it looks good coming out of his hands. He has a nice build/frame with wider shoulders and long arms. The son of a coach locks in on defense and is a pure team player who plays the right way.
Miles Nash PG 6’0 2022 Brophy Prep
-A pure PG who changes speeds and directions quickly. He can use his tight handle and speed to get into the lane and score on layups or floaters. His shooting still can make strides but is improved from a year ago. He advanced passes well and will run an offense. He is quick on the ball defensively.
