First things first, Silver Creek is the clear #1 team and it isn’t close. Heritage Hills was up there early but they haven’t been able to play like they did last year and they needed to take that step forward if they were going to make a run. Now, those are both State title contenders but it is really Silver Creek and everyone else.
Connersville was great early but dropped a pair of games this weekend that hurt them in South Bend Washington and Valparaiso. Connersville dropped down from 4A to 3A this year and in 4A, Kerry Brown and Connersville always seemed to win these tough games to extend their season. Now, they are still 8-2 but haven’t beaten a really good team yet that they shouldn’t have a chance against. Their next opportunity is I guess Greensburg January 10th. See if they can get back on track.
Danville has been one of the biggest surprises as they sit 9-1 and have some big wins over NorthWood, Chatard, Franklin, and Greencastle. They did lose to Plainfield but only by 2. The Hendricks County Tournament is up next and with teams like Avon and Brownsburg in it, along with Plainfield, will be a great test to see if they can keep this momentum going.
Norwell might be legit. They are 8-0 on the season and have wins over Bishop Dwenger and Fort Wayne Carroll, the same Carroll team that just won the SAC tournament. Norwell is holding opponents under 40.8 ppg and scoring more than 62 each time out. That is best for 14th in scoring difference. They have some decent games left on the schedule but don’t be surprised if they make it through the Mishawaka Marian tournament this weekend and then roll until Homestead at the end of the year.
South Bend St. Joseph is really good and outside of a hiccup against Goshen, they have been dominant. With Indiana All-Star candidate J.R. Konieczny, SBSJ has a ton of high-end talent and for a 3A team, their schedule is tough but not too bad that they can’t break 20 wins and be looking into March. They are what we though they were going to be to this point but maybe better. Culver Academy on January 18th will be one to watch.
Evansville Bosse is still an enigma at this point. They are 4-4 but have two losses to out of state teams we don’t know much about and a loss to Washington that doesn’t look great. They also only have one good win over Gary West who was without their best player. Bosse has talent but this might not be their best team in recent years.
Edgewood has also been a disappointment to this point in the season. They are 4-6 and are still without Trevor Taylor, their best talent, which is making life a bit difficult. Schedule hasn’t been easy but there are some wins in there for a team that still had some serious talent on their roster. Now, they are going to be playing catchup a bit as they get a little bit of a reprieve after playing Sullivan this Friday. Still, need this group to get whole again and see where they are at then.
