Week 6 Rankings Update
It was another weather shortened week around the state, but there was plenty of action that caused some chaos within the rankings across all four classes. In all, 15 of the 40 ranked teams lost at least one game, which led to plenty of shakeup. We detail the movement below.
In Class 4A, Waukee (9-0) remains strong at the top, with four MVC teams rounding out the top five: Waterloo West (8-1), Cedar Falls (7-1), Iowa City West (7-1) and Hempstead (9-1). Dowling Catholic (8-2) fell from #4 to #7 following their loss to Ankeny (10-1), who rose a pair of spots up to #6 this week. Dubuque Senior (6-1) is the lone newcomer to the rankings this week, taking the place of Sioux City East, who lost to Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, who falls just outside the rankings.
Bowen Born and Norwalk are rolling right now, winning their last 4 by an average of 21 pointsIn 3A, only one team remains in the place they were last week, and that’s MOC-Floyd Valley (10-2), holding at #8. Norwalk (8-2) and high scoring guard Bowen Born take over the top spot, which is where they started the season. Nobody is playing better than the Warriors right now, winning their last four games by an average of 21 points a game. Born is averaging 38.8 points a night. Assumption (8-2) jumps back up to the #2 spot, followed by Winterset (7-2), Marion (9-1) and Pella (8-2) to round out the top five. Gilbert (8-2) enters at #7, while Ballard (7-4) comes in at #10. Despite their four losses, the Bombers are coming off a week in which they knocked off the previous #1 (Carroll) and #2 (Winterset) teams, so they had to be ranked this week. Several other teams (Le Mars, Glenwood, Algona, Denison-Schleswig, Harlan, Dallas Center-Grimes, Central DeWitt, Clear Lake and Decorah) were also considered, as 3A continues to be as topsy-turvy as ever.
For the first time all year, there was significant movement in Class 2A. Camanche (9-0) remains locked into the top spot following their destruction of previous #2 Monticello, 77-55, on Tuesday night. Monticello (10-2) dropped to #6 as a result. West Sioux (2-0), Treynor (11-1), Boyden-Hull (10-1) and North Linn (10-0) all moved up a spot each to round out the top five. Western Christian (8-2), Van Meter (10-0) and West Branch (10-1) all enter the rankings this week, at #7, #9 and #10, respectively.
Angelo Winkel and Bishop Garrigan take over the #1 spot in 1ABishop Garrigan (11-1) becomes the fourth different team to top the 1A rankings this season. The Golden Bears vault up to the #1 spot following losses by Montezuma and St. Mary’s. Montezuma (8-1) lost by 3 in overtime to a solid Albia team and fall just one spot to #2. Easton Valley (11-0), Lake Mills (11-1) and South O’Brien (10-2) round out the top five. South O’Brien moves up three spots on the strength of their win over St. Mary’s and an overall stronger resume than Martensdale-St. Mary’s and WACO, who each fall as a result of the Wolverines moving up.
