Week 4 Rankings Update
It was a short week of action as teams returned from the holiday break, and nine of the 40 teams we had ranked across the four classes didn’t even play a game, so there isn’t a whole lot of movement in this week’s rankings update. But there were some notable results that led to some shakeup.
Michael Duax is averaging 22.6 points for unbeaten HempsteadIn Class 4A, Waukee (6-0) stays at the top, but Dubuque Hempstead (7-0) makes a major leap from #7 to #2. Over the break we took a closer look at the Mustangs, and a big leap was overdue. They blew out Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 77-48, and they’ve been absolutely dominant so far this season, winning by an average of 23 points a game. The schedule gets tougher this week, as they travel to both Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Prairie, and have a game at Loras against a solid Springfield Lanphier (IL) squad. So we’ll learn more about Hempstead over the next seven days. Ankeny Centennial (7-1) falls from #3 to #9 following their 13-point loss to Dowling Catholic (6-1). Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (8-0) enters the rankings for the first time this season at #10, with Dubuque Senior, North Scott, Prairie and Cedar Rapids Kennedy nipping at their heels.
The top three remain the same in 3A, as only top ranked Assumption (7-0) played a game this week of the three. Dallas Center-Grimes moves up a spot to #4 following Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s double-overtime loss to Western Christian. The Warriors have lost three overtime games so far this season, all to quality teams, but fall out of the rankings this week. They’ll have a chance to start stockpiling wins and gaining momentum coming up. Pella (5-2) enters the rankings at #10, following a few week absence.
In Class 2A, Camanche (6-0) and Monticello (8-1) remain at the top, while West Sioux (8-0) and Treynor (7-1) flip spots at #3 and #4. The Cardinals were blown out by Kansas powerhouse Blue Valley Northwest (a school nearly nine times bigger) and fall just one spot. Beckman Catholic (7-1) falls from #5 to #8 following their loss to Central DeWitt, but all ten teams that were ranked last week remain in the rankings.
Class 1A is entirely the same, with St. Mary’s, Remsen (7-0) leading the pack, followed by Montezuma (6-0), Bishop Garrigan (8-1), Easton Valley (8-0) and Lake Mills (6-1).
