Continue ReadingAt PrepHoops Oregon we try hard to continue tracking former Oregon prep basketball stars as long as they remain recruitable athletes for four-year schools. To that end, we have been following a number of top guys as they started their careers at the junior/community college level. Here’s a look at the top sophomores looking to move on.
Robert Ford (2018 Jefferson/Clackamas CC)
Ford is currently the highest recruited former Oregon prep standout in his sophomore year in junior college and has been a dominant force at Clackamas ever since he set foot on campus. He’s followed up a sizzling freshman campaign by averaging 23.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 8.4 assists so far this season and his college options continue to rack up. Ford already has D-I scholarship offers from Portland State and Pacific and also from a number of D-II schools including recently Western Oregon.
Darius Guinn (2018 Grant/Central Wyoming)
Guinn has been having a solid if not spectacular sophomore season at Central Wyoming, leading the team in points (16.9 ppg), rebounds (6.9 rpg), assists (2.8 apg), and steals (1.1 spg). The do-it-all forward can score from anywhere on the court, but has been particularly effective at getting to the free throw line and converting while he’s there (almost 80 percent). Guinn currenty holds Division I offers from Bryant and Southern, D-II offers from Catawba and Western Oregon. Incarnate Word has shown some recent interest and will be attending one of his upcoming games.
Elijah Gonzales (2017 Clackamas/Clarendon-TX)
The 2017 6A Player of the year is averaging 10.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, and a conference-leading 5.8 assists as Clarendon has gotten off to a 15-1 start to the season. While he started the year as more of a distributor, his scoring has picked up lately. Gonzales currently holds an offer to come back home and play at Portland.
Myles Fitzgerald-Warren (2017 Madison/Collin-TX)
The former Senator is averaging 11.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.8 assists as a full-time starter for Collin. Fitzgerald-Warren had some big scoring games early on in the year against some top-notch opponents. The former Fresno State Bulldog is now in his third year out of high school so it will be interesting to see if he will qualify to return to D-I or if D-II will be his next destination.
Thomas Miles (2017 Jefferson/Midland-TX)
Miles is currently averaging 12.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists at Midland, which has traditionally been a Texas JC power but is having a so-so season this year. The former Demo is currently in his third year of junior college after having spent the past two seasons at the College of Southern Idaho, the first as a redshirt, so his four-year future will likely depend on his academic progress.
Chuka Mekkam (2017 Jesuit/Vincennes-IN)
After spending his first season as a backup on Vincennes’ NJCAA National Championship team, Mekkam has returned as a starting guard, averaging 8.2 points and 4.3 assists. His 3.5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio leads the team and he has recently emerged as a scoring threat with a couple of 20-point games. Mekkam earned D-II interest while at prep school prior to his time at Vincennes.
