For those teams, a few players stepped into the stoplight to show what they can do.
Micah Kobuszewski, junior, Seaman:
Seaman remains in search of its first win, but they continue to fight. In the McPherson Invitational, they took Junction City to overtime and battled Wichita North to the wire. Kobuszewski became Seaman’s go-to guy during the tournament. He put up 12 against a tough Derby team, then 9 against Junction City and 14 against Wichita North.
Dagen Brewer, sophomore, Seaman:
While freshman Kaeden Bonner continues to impress, the play of Brewer shouldn’t be overlooked. The 5-foot-10 sophomore scored 9 against Derby, 10 against Junction City and finished the tournament with 14 against Wichita North.
Isaiah Johnson, junior, Shawnee Heights:
The T-Birds traveled to the Dodge City Tournament of Champions, where they faced some elite competition. But Johnson showed he could lead Shawnee Heights from the perimeter. He scored 11 in the win against Dodge City. Then he had 13 against Campus, the third ranked team in the entire state. He finished up with 10 against another 6A powerhouse, Manhattan.
Marquis Barksdale, senior, Shawnee Heights:
Scoring in the paint wasn’t easy at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions. But veteran Barksdale tossed in 10 points against Dodge City and 18 against Manhattan. It was only against the elite Campus team that he didn’t make his usual production.
Noah Krueger, senior, Washburn Rural:
Rural lost a disappointing opening round game to Ottawa. But Krueger did his part with 13 points, including three shots from behind the arc. He followed that up with 12 in the win against Holton.
