Tuesday’s Scoreboard Breakers: Week 7
In this article:
Every week I give a rundown on the top scorers on the day. Tuesday is a day that brings big-time performances all across the state. While I typically focus on about five players there was no way that I could only stick to five this time around. Here are some players that stood out to me.
Cade Palmer Cade Palmer 5'11" | CG Rangeview | 2021 State CO – Rangeview
Junior sharpshooter Cade Palmer Cade Palmer 5'11" | CG Rangeview | 2021 State CO had himself a day. I mean a real day. He finished with a career-high 29 points after hitting a career-best nine 3-pointers in the game. NINE!! He went 9-13 from beyond the arc and shot Thornton right out of the game from the jump. He found a rhythm early and did not look back from there. He hit a couple off of the dribble, he was wide open, he was on the move – anything you could think of Palmer was able to do it. If he is able to continue hitting shots like this on a consistent basis, with their top players also getting inside and scoring as well the Raiders have a VERY high chance of repeating. He is a player that plays with such energy and hustle and on Tuesday he shot the ball lights out as well.
Trey Ward Trey Ward 6'2" | CG Mead | 2020 State CO – Mead
Mead is a team that is just taking over this year and no matter where you look, you are going to see something about this team as they seem to have it all. Their best player as of late has been senior guard Trey Ward Trey Ward 6'2" | CG Mead | 2020 State CO who has truly dominated. In one of Mead’s best games of the year, a 77-71 win over Windsor they leaned on their senior to help bring them the win as he finished with a season-high 30 points. Ward could not be slowed down in the paint as he carved up the defense inside. He finished through traffic, he got off a couple of dunks and also finished a few and-1’s to show off his strength. He went 16-17 from the free-throw line and dared anybody that stepped in front of him to stop him. His confidence is growing and growing and Mead is coming into their own as he is leading the way.
Phil Geraghty – Dawson School
2A has some hidden gem type scorers in that classification. On Tuesday there was a high scoring battle between Dawson School and Heritage Christian that was a back and forth high scoring game. Dawson school got another huge scoring day from their Senior point guard Phil Geraghty as he put up a season-high 25 points in the game. He hit three 3-pointers but he could not be contained getting to the rim as he went 12-13 from the free-throw line. Heritage Christian fouled him and he made them pay and it rang up for a big game and win that Dawson School needed. He is enjoying a solid season and he had another high scoring day. He is a player that I will keep on my radar.
Sam Howery Sam Howery 6'1" | PG St. Mary’s | 2022 State CO – St. Mary
Howery is one of the best scorers in the entire class that leads the class in scoring. He put up 14.5 points a game as a freshman and has upped those numbers to 21.9 points a game this sophomore season and he is coming off of a huge scoring game against Salida on Tuesday where he erupted for 28 points. His 3-point shot was not falling so he made it a point to get out on the break and also attack the paint to get himself going. He had seven steals in the game which pushed him up to 4.0 a game and turned those into scoring opportunities. Howery is a player that you have to see that plays well above his years.
Rylan Haines – Erie
Erie had a blowout win against Roosevelt on Tuesday and in their win, 6’0 wing Rylan Haines finished with a career-high 21 points. He was ultra-efficient from the field as he went 8-9 and his only miss was on a 3-pointer. He knocked down two shots from beyond the arc, ran the lanes correctly and his teammates made sure to feed the hot hand. If he is able to continue having these types of games with a solid group surrounding him then Erie can surprise a team or two.
Dominique Clifford Dominique Clifford 6'5" | CG Vanguard | 2020 State #81 Nation CO – Vanguard
The No.1 player in the state continued his onslaught as dominating teams in every single way imaginable. He is a player that does not have to force the issue but he is so talented and works so hard in every aspect of the game that he finds himself often more often than not. Against Trinidad the Coursers went all the way out there and saw their star player finish with 30 points on the night, He shot the ball, had open dunks and also made sure to get others involved. He is in a groove and whenever he plays it just seems as if you can pencil him in for a big score.
Donta Dawson Donta Dawson 6'4" | PF Colorado Prep | 2021 State CO Jr.– Harrison
Dawson just seems to be coming on at the right time as of late as it seems that we are writing about him every single day now. There was no way that he could go overlooked on Tuesday as he scored a career-high 33 points on the night to pick up a conference win against Mitchell. Dawson finished with 15 points from beyond the arc and when they tried to slow him down on the perimeter he got in the lane and finished well and also got in the open court and was dunking the ball for easy baskets. He also got three steals in which he turned into highlight finishes and also dished out three assists as well.
Ty Foster Ty Foster 6'1" | PG Lincoln | 2020 State CO – Lincoln
In Lincoln’s 73-71 overtime win in a conference battle over the Spartans, it was their point guard that led the way for Lincoln and secured the victory. He finished with 21 points on the night and his work was all done inside. He turned the corner and overpowered smaller defenders that stood in his way. He finished on them with both hands, backed players down and played within the flow of the offense. He turned a couple of steals into baskets and showed up when his team needed him most.
Javonte Johnson Javonte Johnson 6'6" | CG Cheyenne Mountain | 2020 State #147 Nation CO – Cheyenne Mountain
This just might have been Johnson’s best game this season when you take it all into account. Against one of the better teams that Cheyenne Mountain will play this season he was able to go for 37 points and it was how it was done that stands out. It was one of the most efficient games that he had this year as he went 15-19 from the field. He knocked down two 3-pointers but the bulk of his work was done inside. He was dunking the ball, finishing through traffic and just a bit too much for Lewis-Palmer as they were forced to start fouling him inside. He also led the game in rebounds which showed that he did the dirty work. Johnson is the No.2 overall player in the state and with games like this, it is no secret why Cheyenne Mountain is looking like the favorites in 4A.
