Newman Smith Trojans defeated Woodrow Wilson Wildcats 93-70. The Trojans showed why they are #7 in Class 5A with an overall record of 21-0. Newman Smith loves to speed up the game by pressing the ball 94ft. While the Wildcats are at their best in a half-court set working the give & go for a quick bucket. This game was exciting to watch as five players put up some huge numbers.
5’10| Jr. | Thibaut Tagnon | had to be my favorite of the game. He is a very crafty but fearless shooting guard with a high IQ and plays at a great pace while making others better. He will embarrass you if you take him lightly. Shoots well off the dribble. Tagnon hit six three-pointers and finished the game with a game-high of 28pts.
6’0| Sr.| Grant Goosby| plays the game very smooth & relax with a lot of poise. He is a pg that leads well and knows how to keep his teammates involved, One of his most intriguing talents is the pull-up shot. He was 80% for the game hitting 9 pull-ups & went 7-8 from the line and finished the game with 28pts.
6’6| Sr.| Beau Becker Beau Becker 6'4" | SF Woodrow Wilson | 2020 State TX | gave Smith problems all game long on both ends of the court. He has one of the softest touches around the basket and used his length to his advantage whether it’s blocking shots, rebounding or scoring over players. His ability to shoot it from the outside makes Beau one of the best pick & roll and pick & pop players I’ve have seen in 2020 class. Becker had 17pts at half time and finished the game with 27pts.
6’4| Sr.| Jarren Cook Jarren Cook 6'4" | SG Carrolton Newman Smith | 2020 State TX | the Sam Houston State signee has a well-rounded game and full of basketball passion. He is a team player with a high motor on both ends of the court. Jarren was the most athletic player on the court. The things he can do makes him a threat at all times and hard to guard. Cook opened up the game with back to back three-pointers he also had two high flying dunks that woke up the fans. He finished the game with 20pts.
6’5| Sr.| Domani Villaruel| has to be my sleeper player of the game. He was a big force down low dominating with his size and protecting the rim. Domani is a must-have for college coaches that are looking for that X-factor player. He consistently got boards, block shots, and made some nice power buckets not to mention his vision to find the open man when he gets doubled teamed. Villaruel finished the game with 16pts.
In Closing: The Trojans have a bright future this year and years to come. One thing I love about this year’s team is that the players know their roles and play hard for each other. The Wildcats are a sleeper team and very well-coached. If they get in the playoffs they will upset some teams and make a strong run. I look forward to covering both of these teams during the playoffs.
