Three Up
La Crescent-Hokah. The Lancers have won 11 games in a row pushing to 13-3 on the season including recent wins over St. Charles (for the second time this year), Cristo Rey Jesuit, and Stewartville. They are undefeated with a big game against Caledonia coming up Friday. La Crescent is led by a pair of frontcourt seniors in Zach Todd and Luke Schwartzhoff who are both scoring 20 a game. Todd is the well built warrior type finishing at the rim while Schwartzhoff is a skilled face-up big.
Minnesota Valley Lutheran. Jake Kettner leaves, MVL goes up to AA, and everything is expected to just go away? Not happening. The Chargers are winning games by an average of 24 points a game including wins over New Ulm Cathedral and St. Croix Lutheran for a record of 16-1. This team wins with balance as Mason Cox is a double-double battler and Dunwa Omot is one of the best scorers not getting state wide pub. He’s scoring 26 a game.
Watertown-Mayer. The Royals have traditionally been a quality Class AA school and after a rough couple of seasons the Royals are 11-4 after winning six of their last seven games. A recent 54-51 win over Annandale showed this team is on it’s way to a nice year and things could get better if they beat Mound-Westonka. It’s a senior core leading this group with Will McBee producing as the leading scorer but Cale Wabbe and Sam Ragner right there with him.
Three Down
Albany. Albany looked like a team that could jump into the Class AA rankings after beating Osakis, and then they lost half of their next eight basketball games dropping to 10-5. The Delano and Mora games weren’t close contests and the team is in the middle of five straight road contests. Nolan Rueter is a 6-foot-2 junior guard leading the team in scoring and assists.
Redwood Valley. The Cards were 10-3 and the schedule got tougher with several road games. They dropped three straight (Willmar, JCC, and Springfield) in close games and now they have to play Marshall. A six game winning streak started the new year and Redwood Valley could get back to where they need to with some wins.
Concordia Academy. A couple losses isn’t going to damper the spirits of the Beacons. They won 11 games last year and they have matched that already this year. MCA and St. Croix Prep beat up Concordia Academy so a win to get back on track is needed soon. To nobody’s surprise Essay Hagos is having a monster season at 21 a game after a tremendous summer.
