The Weekend Menu
Looking for high school games to attend over the weekend in South Dakota? Here is a slate of contests that should excite fans everywhere.
Tasty Appetizer. A girls game/boys game double header kicks off the weekend at Sioux Falls O’Gorman and at Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Number eight ranked Rapid City Central gets a chance to prove what they are capable of when they take on the top ranked team in Class AA Sioux Falls O’Gorman. That game is at 8pm with the girls game starting at 6:30. Not that far away 5th ranked Sioux Falls Roosevelt is playing Rapid City Stevens who is ranked 7th in the state. Central vs O’Gorman has our attention as junior guard Micah Swallow and Julian Swallow are coming off some excellent performances beating good teams from North Dakota and Wyoming. Both Central and O’Gorman are on six game winning streaks. O’Gorman is coming off a 16 point win over Washington led by Akoi Akoi‘s 15 points and the dunk show of 6-foot-6 junior big Hayden Muirhead.
Specials. #2 SF Christian vs #6 Madison tonight at 8pm. The Chargers are both two loss teams. What’s the difference between the teams? Sioux Falls Christian has seriously out-played the two teams that Madison has lost two (Dell Rapids and Lennox). The Chargers lost to Vermillion by a point last night so there will be a motivation to rebound. Six-foot-3 wing Tyler Prins has certainly stepped forward as a player to know. A player that continues to catch our eye for Madison is 6-foot-3 wing Tyler Tappe. Tappe is coming off a 15 point, 8 board, and 8 assist game and he will certainly run into Prins regularly.
Main Course. The 38th Annual Hanson Classic is this Saturday. A full slate of contests kicking off at 10am in the Corn Palace in Mitchell and are scheduled every 90 minutes after. For example Aberdeen Roncalli vs Parkston play at 10pm followed by Bridgewater/Emery vs Faith at 11:30am.
Aberdeen Roncalli vs Parkston
Bridgewater/Emery vs Faith
Clark/Willow Lake vs #10A Tea Area
Corsica/Stickney vs #7B Aberdeen Christian
#2B White River vs #8B Canistota
Platte Geddes vs #4 Hanson
#1B Viborg/Hurley vs #3B De Smet
#1A St. Thomas More vs #4A Sioux Valley
Dessert. Tomorrow South Dakota basketball fans get their main course (taco in a bag is always good) and their dessert (school made cheesecake is the recent quality adventure I’ve ran into at a game) in the same place. The Corn Palace will provide hoops fans with three big time ranked match-ups and several quality players. Here’s one player match-up for each of the three top ten showdowns.
White River vs Canistota – Six-foot sophomore guard Dylan Marshall has developed into a consistent scorer for undefeated White River while 5-foot-11 junior guard Tyce Ortman will be opposite Marshall in a playmaking role.
Viborg/Hurley vs De Smet – Six-foot-4 junior forward Eli Boomgarden and 6-foot-4 junior guard Chase Mason have helped lead the Cougars to the top spot in the state. Kalen Garry is one of the best sophomores in the state and he leads De Smet.
St. Thomas More vs Sioux Valley – Love the match-up of senior 5-foot-10 guards Max Nielson and Caden Casey in a game of top teams in the state.
