They opened up a 21-2 advantage after one quarter of play and had extended their lead to 39-15 by the halftime buzzer. The second half got a little chippy as both teams got some physical fouls called on them but that did not rattle the Trojans as they led 48-22 after three quarters of play. The Jenks reserves got a lot of time in the fourth quarter as they coasted to an easy win 73-37.
Takeaways
Jenks Defense
Jenks played stellar defense on the night. They were not playing lockdown defense by any means but they were playing good disciplined defense while keeping their man in front of them. If they got beat they had a teammate there to slide over and help. They played as a team and got into the bodies of their opponents. The Spartans seemed flustered by the defense and for long stretches of the game they could not find a way to score.
The Absence of Luke Hasz
One of the Spartans best players in Luke Hasz was sidelined against Jenks with a lower leg injury. His absence was felt all too well on the court. They struggled on the offensive end to find any scoring and that is where Hasz could normally get to the bucket and get and easy two points to right the ship. He was also missed on the boards tonight. Jenks had a lot of length and the Spartans could have used his athleticism to combat that. While Luke is out with this injury the Spartans will need to find a way to make up for his production lost or they might have a rough stretch going into the playoffs.
Foul Trouble
The Spartans were in foul trouble early and often. They had one player finish the game with four fouls while two others fouled out in the third quarter. They were playing rough defense on the night and the refs were having none of it as the Trojans got into the double bonus early in both halves.
Players to Know
Xavier Glenn 2021 Bixby Guard
Glenn was the best player on the night for Bixby. He showed bright spots tonight that might show that he is starting to hit his stride. He played hard and fast despite the scoreline and was able to create some offense for himself when it seemed like the Spartans could not. He hit a couple of step back jumpers from midrange while being tightly guarded. Glenn will have the opportunity to step up in the absence of Hasz and if he can do so then Bixby could continue to be dangerous. He finished the night with a team high 11 points.
Anferee Nelson 2020 Jenks Guard
Nelson was the best guard on the court tonight. He played with composure and a team first mindset. He was finding the open man whenever he could not find a shot and if he were left open he would knock down the shot. Nelson was also present on the boards tonight as he would get in and fight for almost every rebound. Nelson finished with a game high of 15 points.
Benjamin Averitt 2022 Jenks Wing
Averitt was the best player inside the paint on the night. He was controlling the lane and having his way down low. He is an athletic player that can step out to the wing as well as bang down low. He was dominant on the boards pulling down what seemed like rebound after rebound. He played tough defense on the interior as well. He got into the body of his opponent and had good lateral quickness to stay in front of his man. Averitt finished the night with 14 points.
