The Griffins kept their hopes alive for another share of a league title, behind the duo of Kevin Kent and David Olcomendy, who finished with 26 and 17 points, respectively. Below are the Ten Best performers from Thursday’s game.
Best Overall Performance: Kevin Kent, Los Alamitos
This was an easy pick as Kent scored a game-high 26 points with 20 of them coming in a first half onslaught from the unsigned senior. The 5-foot-8 point guard is a throwback type guy in the sense that he’s a better mid-range shooter than he is from behind the arc. Kent uses his quickness in the half-court to get to his mid-range spot and pull-up and he uses his speed in transition to get to the basket where he can finish much bigger than his size.
Best Shooter: Jackie Kwok, Edison
On a night Edison would like to have back, Kwok was a bright spot for the Chargers. He scored a team-high 20 points and connected on four 3-pointers. The 5-foot-11 junior took advantage of the time and space provided by the Los Al defense and pulled his catch-and-shoot perimeter set shot with confidence.
Best Rebounder: David Olcomendy, Los Alamitos
As mentioned above, Olcomendy finished with 17 points, but also added a game-high 13 rebounds to his stat line. The 6-foot-6 senior battled in the paint on both ends of the floor, helping limit the Chargers to one shot attempt and pulling down second chance opportunities for his squad on the offensive glass.
Best Passer: Everett May, Los Alamitos
This isn’t a category we’re used to seeing May make an appearance in. The 6-foot-5 wing is known for his shooting, but the junior dished out a handful of assists and made the right decision advancing the ball in transition and making the extra pass in the half-court setting.
Best Motor: Bradley Luna, Edison
The Chargers always have that one dual-spot, football/basketball player who just simply gets after it and Luna is that guy. The 6-foot-2 junior plays with a toughness and aggressiveness on both ends of the floor that sets the tone for much of Edison’s success on the offensive and defensive ends.
Best Supporting Effort: Everett May, Los Alamitos
In addition to his passing, May played a solid all-around floor game, finishing with eight points and a handful of blocks, assists and rebounds. It was good to see the shooting specialist make an impact in other aspects of the game.
Best Bench Effort: Kaden Kent, Los Alamitos
The sophomore brother of senior Kevin carries himself with a similar level of confidence and can score in a hurry. Kaden came off the bench to score ten points, including two deep 3-pointers, and has a similar feel for the game as his brother, which bodes well for the Griffins’ future.
Best Glue-Guy: Ed Shean, Los Alamitos
Shean is a big time lacrosse player who is committed to Ohio State and he is the definition of what a glue-guy is. He’s the first on the floor for loose balls, battles on both the offensive and defensive glass, can guard multiple positions, and while he might not be the most gifted hooper, he just makes winning plays.
Best Underclass Performance: Christian Bermudez, Los Alamitos
Bermudez finished with a solid seven points and six rebounds. The sophomore scored all of his points in the third quarter where the Griffins separated themselves from the Chargers.
Best On-Ball Defender: Ed Shean, Los Alamitos
Shean brings that lacrosse toughness and physicality to the basketball court. The 5-foot-11 junior has impressive defensive anticipation instincts and uses his strength to wall-up and keep ball handlers out of the paint.
