This time the matchup came at Wharton where the homeside Wildcats held on for a 46-37 victory.
Plant came out firing ahead 11-2 but 2022 Wharton forward Trevor Dyson scored seven points to end the opening quarter with his team down just two. Both teams went back and forth in the second quarter and it was the Panthers who took a 24-23 lead into the break. However, Wharton held Plant to just 13 second half points to improve to 14-1 on the season.
Here is a look at the standouts from the evening.
Trevor Dyson (Wharton)
Scoring all nine first quarter points for Wharton, 2022 6’3″ guard/forward Trevor Dyson used his strength and offensive prowess to score often. He added a team-best 15 points and was active on the glass and was a scrappy defender often generating steals and pushing the ball in tempo. Dyson is a disciplined offensive weapon who can shoot the mid-range as well.
Reagan Weiss (Plant)
17 of Plant’s 24 first half points came from 2020 6’6″ forward Reagan Weiss. He was firing on all cylinders from deep, even with a defender right in his face. Weiss doesn’t shy away as a shooter and can feed his teammates down low and cut to the basket for lay-ins. Wharton held him to just two points in the second half, so he ended with 19 total points, but either way, it was an admirable showing from the senior.
Carr Thiam (Wharton)
Coming alive in the second quarter, 2020 6’4″ guard Carr Thiam turned up his toughness and went to the rack. He recorded 13 points in this game which included three 3-point plays which came on buckets inside and the foul. Thiam’s aggressiveness was contagious and something that opened things up for this group in the second half when they needed scoring.
Josh Barnett (Wharton)
2020 6’5″ forward Josh Barnett was finishing strong and using his length to his advantage all game long. Battling on the boards and scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half, the effort was there for the senior. Barnett had eight points in the third quarter and was a constant attacker in this game for a scrappy Wharton squad.
Robbie Peek (Plant)
Scoring five of his team’s first eight points, 2020 6′ guard Robbie Peek displayed confidence in his shot. He played poised as a jump shooter and finished with 14 points pacing Weiss. Peek connected on four 3’s including three in the second half alone. His stretch shooting kept his team within single digits, even late. Peek is a dangerous outside weapon who mixes it up in transition at times.
