Tampa Catholic pushed away with a 16-0 run that lasted over half of the fourth quarter to win 52-41 over visiting Jesuit on Friday night.
The gym was nearly filled to the max during the JV game prior and it was loud and rowdy like usual for the varsity meeting. Tampa Catholic has now won seven straight over Jesuit and eight of the last nine matchups dating back to Jan. 8, 2016.
Here is a look at the best performances from the evening.
Johni Broome (Tampa Catholic)
The clear cut top player in this game was 2020 6’9″ forward Johni Broome. The Morehead State commit totaled 21 points and 21 rebounds. Jesuit had no answer for the senior big man and he moves his body very well down low to finish and grab boards with ease. Broome has come a long way after transferring over to Tampa Catholic from Plant City last June. He’s found his groove and his long arms and confidence helps his overall game to continue to get better. He’s set up to be a rock solid big man at the next level.
Alijah Harrison (Tampa Catholic)
It was a slow start for 2020 6’5″ guard Alijah Harrison. The senior has been a starter dating back to his freshman season with Kevin Knox by his side, so he knows what it is like to play in these rivalry games. As the game went on, the better Harrison got. He had five points late in the second quarter which included a corner 3-pointer. Harrison finished with nine total points after tacking on four points midway through the final quarter to put the game on ice.
Jasiah Taylor (Jesuit)
The best shooter in this game for Jesuit was 2022 5’9″ guard Jasiah Taylor. His buzzer beating 3 from the corner at the half cut the deficit to 30-29 and really gave Jesuit life heading into the locker room (video). Taylor can certainly hurt you from deep if left open and his ability to find openings for others is nice to see.
Kobe Knox & Eddrin Bronson (Tampa Catholic)
Jesuit made 2020 6’5″ guard Kobe Knox earn all eight of his points. Held scoreless in the first quarter, he had back to back dunks in the second quarter that exploded the crowd and forced the opposing defense to make changes. Knox is a long attacker who works well with this athletic group. Alongside him, I liked 2023 6’1″ guard Eddrin Bronson a lot. He had all seven of his points in the first half, but he played confidently, with purpose and has plenty of strength to his frame already. He’s a freshman to monitor closely.
Ryan Weir & Bennett Anderson (Jesuit)
Combining for 13 points, Jesuit’s top two pieces Bennett Anderson and Ryan Weir were leading the offense the entire game. Anderson, a 2020 6’2″ guard was pressured often by Tampa Catholic and was forced to go to the rack. He finished with six points and played tough. As for Weir, the crafty 2021 5’11” guard had seven points and plays with endless energy and vocalness on both ends of the floor.
