Cameron Glover, Hewitt-Trussville: Early into Tuesday night’s game, it was all the Jaguars from Spain Park, but Cameron Glover had other thoughts. He was the best players for the Huskies from the get-go. He looked to shoot and his left handed shot was difficult to guard. Midway through the third quarter, he took over scoring 15 points and pulled the lead within 8 at the end of the third. The way he was shooting, it seemed like he was throwing rocks into the Grand Canyon. He finished with 23 total points. Despite Glover’s efforts, the Huskies came up 2 points short in the end.
Hopkins Long, Hewitt-Trussville: Hopkins was an excellent court general for Hewitt. He was excellent at attacking inside and knocking down outside jumpers. He handled the ball well and had several combo moves. He was able to adapt to the defense rather than being single-tract minded which typically leads to a turnover. He was very effective at driving and dishing to the bigs or kicking out to the guards. On defense, he was licking his chops at guarding Spain Park’s smaller, Joshua Harrington. His over aggressiveness got him in trouble a couple of times, but still great to be aggressive the entire game.
J’Vahn Durgan, Hewitt-Trussville: J’Vahn was a really smart player for the Huskies. From a point standpoint, he did not contribute much, but in other areas, he seemed to be the rudder to the ship. He refused to give up on plays and always got back on defense. One time, he was rewarded with a big block. He seemed smart and knew when to back out of the play and reset. As Cameron started heating up, J’Vahn knew how to get him the ball and keep feeding him. He really locked in on defense despite being given the hard assignment of guarding Spain Park’s Cameron Crawford. Players like J’Vahn are critical in a team’s success. As Kobe Bryant said, I’ll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it’s sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.” Despite the loss, despite J’Vahn to bring the energy the rest of the season.
Collin Turner, Spain Park: Collin Turner was a huge presence inside for the Jaguars. He started off the game with a huge two-handed dunk. He protected the paint the entire night blocking 4 shots. He a beautiful inside/outside combo being able to stretch the floor and knock down threes. He was also able to put his back to the basket and finish with a pretty right hand hook. He finished with 13 total points. If he can develop a left hand hook shot, he’ll be super hard to deal with.
Joshua Harrington, Spain Park: Standing at 5’7″ and weighing 125 lbs, Joshua was by far the smallest player on the court, but played as if he was 6’5″ dominating the game. He opened up the game with a huge wing three pointer. He played with so much energy. He dove on the floor for lose balls keeping possessions alive. He was clapping after good calls or big shots. He handled the pressure well being able to dribble through the press. His size hurt him getting rebounds and being able to finish in the paint. But he was a sharp shooter from the perimeter. He finished with 17 points from 5 three pointers.
Cameron Crawford, Spain Park: Inevitably the best player on the court tonight, Cameron Crawford showed up and played great when it mattered. He was able to attack and spin to his right and able to finish. He had active hands on defense and huge a huge block. He was able to step outside and knock down a three pointer. Being able to do that, opened up the court and allowed him to attack. As time wound down in regulation, he took the ball attacked to his left, spun, and floated it over the defense winning the game with 1.8 seconds remaining. As it’s been said time and time again, big time players make big time plays.
