I got to the event around early afternoon and watched each game from that point on. I took a look at various players by year and concentrated on the top standouts from each grade. Here’s a look at some of the top seniors from the event.
1. Rodney Bradley – View Park
Bradley has to be one of the most underrated guards in the Los Angeles area. He’s a surefire scorer who is always looking to make the right play. He has a solid elbow jumper and can get where he wants to go in two dribbles or less. Good body control around the rim. He can pass off the dribble in the halfcourt and is always looking for his teammates. Solid defender with good hands and feet.
2. David Cheatom – University
Cheatom is such an effortless scorer, he makes it look easy. His midrange game is solid and he’s very crafty off the dribble. He has an improving three-point shot. He can make plays for himself or for his teammates off the defensive pressure he draws. Solid off the dribble game; can attack the rim and get himself to the free-throw line. Pretty solid rebounder for a wing. Another underrated player with some D2 offers.
3. Marcus Dewberry – View Park
Dewberry is a solid floor general. He knows when to push the pace and when to slow the offense down a little bit. Knows when and how to push the ball in transition and keep the defense on their heels. He’s a patient player in the halfcourt and looks to make the right play. Good defensive player who isn’t afraid to pick up defensively full court. Finishes well at the rim.
4. Seymon Calloway – University
Calloway is a solid paint presence for the Wildcats. He plays good defense in the paint. He moves his feet well to stay with opposing bigs. He has good timing on his blocks; knows when to contest and how to contest properly. He’s a solid rebounder; he crashes the offensive glass in search of second shot opportunities for the team. Offensively, he can finish strong around the rim.
5. Jamarie Bailey – Cleveland
Bailey is a transfer from Canoga Park, and he looks like he’s going to make an impact for Cleveland as a senior. He has a little bit of a versatile offensive game. He has a solid looking jumper. He can shoot from the midrange and he can shoot from the three-point line. He can put the ball on the floor and make plays. He can get himself to the rim off the dribble. A pretty decent defensive player.
6. Josiah Chavarria – South Gate
Chavarria is a senior and team captain for South Gate. He’s been a key part to South Gate’s pretty good overall start to the season. For a guard, he is a pretty solid rebounder. He’s not afraid to get into the lane and fight for boards. He handles the ball well and can make plays for himself and his teammates off the dribble. He has a pretty good-looking outside jump shot.
