The game featured several lead changes, big shots, and big-time players. There were a few top performers who local coaches need to be aware of if they are not already.
Tyson Gordon 2020 PG/SG: Tyson Gordon stole the show on Tuesday night. The lengthy guard took over the game in the second half. He made big shot after big shot. He was highly efficient all night long and scored at all three levels. The play of the game was when he hit his third straight 3-pointer from about 33 feet out to give Skutt the lead. Unfortunately for college hoops coaches, Tyson has chosen to play football at North Dakota State University next year. He is outstanding on the football field but for us basketball fans we surely will miss seeing him play on the hardwood next year.
Kolbe Radda 2020 SG: Kolbe Radda was the high point man for Lincoln Pius X. He is an impressive lefty with a smooth stroke. The shooting guard is the go-to guy for the Thunderbolts. He made some finishes on layups where it didn’t look like he was even going to have a window to put it up in traffic. Skutt did their best to make him uncomfortable but he’s always incredibly strong with the ball and determined to get downhill. Kolbe kept his team in the game with a big shot every time it seemed like Skutt was in a position to pull away. It is not hard to see why the versatile guard has multiple D2 scholarships to choose from.
Charlie Fletcher 2021 SG: Charlie Fletcher had a great night on Tuesday. The junior guard managed to get into the teeth of the defense every other possession. Pius struggled to keep in front of him off the bounce. He hit several mid-range jumpers and floaters from just inside the paint that were highly contested. He had fantastic touch around the hoop and never settled. Skutt has a tough trio of senior guards this year with Merfeld, Gordon, and Mcmeen but next year it will be Charlie Fletcher‘s team. If Tuesday was a foreshadowing of what to expect in 2021, he certainly looks like he’s up for the challenge. Fletcher’s stock should rise dramatically early on in his senior season.
Sam and Charlie Hoiberg 2021 PG/SG: The Hoiberg twins are great complimentary guards for any team. Sam Hoiberg is a special ball handler who creates a lot of offense for Pius X off the dribble. He displayed some next-level vision on Tuesday finding his teammates and around the perimeter for open jumpers all night. Charlie Hoiberg impressed me with how active he was without the ball and always managing to get himself open for big three-pointers in the second half. The Hoiberg twins were both pests on defense and did an excellent job of digging the ball out from the post every time Skutt tried to feed the ball inside. They both had several steals in the game. Sam managed to bait the Skutt big men into a couple of bad kick-out passes and jump the passing lane perfectly to start a Pius X fast break. They are not the biggest guys on the court but they certainly do make their presence felt on both ends.
