Continue ReadingDel City avenged its first loss of the season, a 53-66 downing from Carl Albert, Tuesday afternoon against Midwest City, a team whose four-game win streak reached an apex with a 60-57 win against No. 3 Edmond Memorial, in a 61-59 mid-day cross-town brawl at E. S. Sutton Field House in Midwest City, Oklahoma. The players below were the most outstanding on the court, by category.
Most Valuable Player — Keyondre Young | 2021 W | Del City
Keyondre YoungDel City junior Keyondre Young, who has been a spectacular sight among one of the most athletic, disciplined and skilled rosters in the state, was excellent again in the rivalry game. He led the winning team in scoring while out-rebounding every other body on the floor. His 6-foot-6-frame makes him a tall task for a defender, but his skill-set makes him all but un-guard-able at the swing spot. He can shoot the ball, sink shots from the mid-range and finish near the rim, all with elite efficiency.
Best inside scorer — Kyren Williams | 2020 C | Del City
Kyren WilliamsWith a team-high 13 points, Kyren Williams was as close to unstoppable as you could come by in the Eagles’ win. He sealed defenders, finished high and put the ball off the glass and into the hoop. Williams was constantly prepared to make plays with the ball in his hands, moving with uncanny coordination given his stature. He also benefitted from more than a couple clean passes and helped his friends to make highlight plays.
Best player in a loss — Christian Cook | 2020 CG | Midwest City
Christian CookPer the usual, Christian Cook was the show as an individual Tuesday afternoon in front of both student bodies. He led all scorers with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half when Cook knocked down a pair of clutch 3-pointers to aid the Bombers’ comeback stabs that nearly came to fruition. His two first-half points came from an electrifying dunk that sent the east side of the gym into a frenzy that required administrators to guide students off the hardwood and back into their seats.
Best defender — Demontreal Crutchfield | 2020 SG | Del City
Demontreal CrutchfieldAs Nate Goodlow — perhaps the best on-ball defender in the 405 area code — sat on the bench for minutes at a time due to early foul trouble, Demontreal Crutchfield took has place as the fulcrum of Del City’s defense. Crutchfield was unforgiving to casual stabs at catching the Eagles’ defense on its heels. He snatched, swindled and stole the ball away from opposing ball-handlers and led the horde from defense to offense, including once finishing on the opposite end with a slam of his own.
Best shooter — Christian Cook | 2020 CG | Midwest City
What makes Cook a talented shooter? Though it sounds redundant, it’s just that he’s a good shooter; he is extraordinarily consistent and technically habitual. Whether its a third-quarter shot of little foreseeable consequence or a game-time 3-pointer, Cook is up-to-the-task, and his deviation from technique is invisible.
Best slasher — Makale Smith | 2021 PG | Midwest City
Makale SmithMakale Smith‘s ability to rip through numbers of defenders and manipulate the ball through traffic were difficult to fathom, at times, Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot-even one-guard made Del City’s hostile yet nimble defense appear sluggish and heavy-footed as his speed exceeded the Eagles’ efforts. Just as impressive as Smith’s zero-to-100 speed was his mighty elevation to finish above the rim. Finishing with 11 points, the junior even caught a transition dunk in the first quarter.
Best play — Nate Goodlow | 2020 PG | Del City
Nate GoodlowIn a game that included five different players lifting off to finish hanging on the rim and numerous other exciting plays, it was Goodlow who made, perhaps, the best play of the night. The play started with Cook driving toward the lane following a pass from Israel Hart. Cook rose toward the goal with ball-in-hand. Whether his intentions were to lend the rock to a teammate or to add a field goal to his own stat-book were unclear as Goodlow swiped the ball out of his grasp before we could find out. Goodlow accelerated from there, putting the ball ahead of the defense and finishing the dunk on the opposite end.
