Tuesday, we began at Toledo Central Catholic for their game against Whitmer. Thursday, a match of 9-0 teams in the Northern Lakes League, Southview at Perrysburg. Then, finally, a Friday rivalry game between Toledo St. Francis and Toledo St. John’s.
We saw a few underclassmen for the first time and, also, drew new observations on kids we’ve tracked throughout their careers. This particular Scouting Toledo recap is about the upperclassmen!
Before we cover the players, you’ll notice an italicized game description of each game. Those are meant to provide context. Every game isn’t created equal. It’s important to understand the context, in order to fully understand the individual contributions.
Whitmer (38) at Toledo Central Catholic (57)
Central did pretty much whatever they wanted offensively. Very efficient performance from the Irish. Whitmer was missing 6-foot-7 freshman center Ja’Vaughn Jones. Their lack of size on the interior was capitalized on by Central.
Tony Delvaux (2020) | 6-1 SG | Whitmer
stats: 10 points, 2 rebounds
Delvaux scored eight points early in the first period as the unsigned senior displayed his shot-creation ability. Scored with rhythm on multi-dribble moves, using his size and handle to get deep before shooting clever pull-ups over the contest. He takes his time to assess the floor before setting up his move. Delvaux didn’t maintain his aggressiveness from early in the game.
Southview (55) at Perrysburg (76)
Both teams attempted to play crisp halfcourt offense while running when the opportunity arose. It’s just that one team, Perrysburg, was much more mistake-free and physical while doing so. Both teams were undefeated coming in. Perrysburg’s senior-laden roster, though, illustrated the value of experience and raw strength.
Tommy Mackinnon (2021) | 6-1 PG | Southview
stats: 11 points
Mackinnon showcased shot-creation ability against Perrysburg. He plays with balance in traffic, which allows him to shoot floaters and mid-range pull-ups. Good shooter. Solid size at the point guard spot. Very sound player.
Grant Pahl (2021) | 6-1 SG | Southview
stats: 15 points, 3 rebounds
Pahl uses his jump shot to affect the game as a scorer. Terrific spot-shooter who impressed pulling up, too. Made shots while fading. Aggressively looks for scoring opportunities. Flashes in-traffic finishing ability.
Harrison Hosler (2020) | 6-2 C | Perrysburg
stats: 9 points, 7 rebounds
Perrysburg’s X-Factor. Hosler is a physical, athletic interior presence who finishes consistently over the shoulder. Good touch on his baby hooks. Followed missed shots and contributed the highlight of the week on his put-back dunk. Hosler may be an undersized center but he out-muscles nearly all of his opponents.
Toledo St. Francis (45) at Toledo St. John’s (60)
High-energy environment. Halfcourt game with occasional fastbreaks off turnovers. St. John’s executed and consistently made 3-pointers, proving to be the difference in the game.
Sam Swift (2020) | 6-1 SG | Toledo St. John’s
stats: 13 points, 6 rebounds
Swift is a catch-and-score player — mostly on 3-pointers, but he also added an impressive finish on a backdoor cut Friday. Scores it confidently. Effective playing off the ball, often making subtle reposition cuts around the arch to open a passing window.
Feisal Crumby (2021) | 5-11 SG | Toledo St. Francis
stats: 9 points, 2 rebounds
The defensive ball pressure Crumby provides continues to impress. Even when he’s not forcing turnovers — which he did Friday — the energy he forces ball-handlers to exude is impactful. Crumby is a strong, score-minded combo guard that can sit down and beat guys to their spot. Decelerates at the rim for tough layups.
Carsten Mayes (2021) | 6-7 C | Toledo St. Francis
stats: 4 points, 2 rebounds
Mayes had a nice moment in the second half, almost leading to a momentum shift in the Knights favor. He scored a two-hand dunk in the halfcourt then added a contested right-hand hook shot. Mayes is an agile, bouncy big whose athleticism points to potential. Offensive flashes such as these keep us very intrigued.
