Granted they have a young team and lost a few players to transfers, but they are not the Santa Fe we’re used to seeing. However, in the Bishop McGuinness Classic one thing did look familiar and that was their discipline and athleticism, all motivated by head coach Troy Lallemand.
Santa Fe won the consolation over Deer Creek and it was due to the play of two players: Senior Donovan Vickers and sophomore Tabry Shettron.
Vickers only scored five points against Bishop McGuinness on Friday afternoon, but his leadership and game management didn’t go unnoticed. He didn’t have to score because he had two other players in Shettron and Michael Reeves that combined for 25 points. Vickers also had a direct impact on his team getting the ball in the basket with 5 assists.
During his brief stints on the bench, you could catch Vickers shouting at his teammates and serving as another coach for the Wolves.
As for Shettron, he was the Wolves’ dominant force, scoring a game-high 13 points it was clear that McGuinness didn’t stand a chance against him. He was quicker, stronger and overall more athletic than anybody on the opposing team and that’s why Santa Fe won with such dominance against the Irish.
The Wolves record may not reflect it, but they will be a tough out in the playoffs.
