It was a slow first half, but both teams would pick up the pace in the second half to make for an entertaining game all around. Below we will highlight Regis as a whole after coming into Monday night 0-9, with one of the hardest schedules in the state to start the year. They have played teams like Overland, Rangeview, Eagelcrest, Smoky Hill, Cherry Creek, and a couple tough games early in the season out of state. Regis is certainly battled tested as they head into conference play in the upcoming week or so, it will be fun to see how they fair in the second half of the season.
Young Team Overall:
Regis only has two seniors on their roster this year, Will Barbara being one of them who had a nice game against GW. He finished the night with nine points, seven of them coming in the second-half to help push Regis past GW. Blakeley Stoughton and Michael Wolf, both juniors did their part in securing the win, Michael led the way in scoring on the night for Regis with 15 and Blakeley would add 12 points and also pulled 10 boards for his first double-double of the year. Michael hit a couple of key threes as well as knocked down five of seven from the charity strip in the fourth. Blakeley did a great job defensively all night guarding Kendale Johnson most of the game, and holding him to only four points. Ty Bergman, the 6’7 big man did a nice job on the night protecting the paint for Regis, with several block shots. He also added ten points and ten boards on the night, finishing around the rim well and even stretched the defense for a few missed threes. He will be a big to watch going forward. Sophomore, Kyle Sandler struggled shooting the ball on the night but did a nice job of impacting the game on the glass with eights rebounds, five on the offensive glass and by finding the open teammate. Kyle is currently averaging: 9.8 PPG, 5.8 RPG, he ranks second on the team in terms of scoring and first in rebounding through ten games.
Juniors to watch going forward:
Blakeley Stoughton – It will be fun to see how Blakeley continues to grow his game over the next year and a half. He is a lefty who can impact the game in all aspects. In the game versus GW he got to the paint and finished well in traffic, and attacked the glass hard. What stood out most to me was his overall defense in the game, he was matched up with Kendale for a large part of the game and did a great job, holding him to only four points on the night. Kendale did get to the paint at times, but Regis did a nice job of making him finish over several players. Blakeley is averaging: 9.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.7 APG so far in his junior year, and he is shooting fifty-seven percent from inside the three-point arc. He has scored double-figures in five of their ten games so far.
Michael Wolf – Michael does a nice job in the back-court controlling the pace of the game foe Regis. He is leading the team in points to start the season, averaging 12.2 PPG, shooting thirty-four percent from long distance. His current season high cameo against a loss at Cherry Creek were he scored 21 points. He is one of their leaders out there and I expect big things going forward for him. He plays in control and does a nice job of protecting the ball with only sixteen turnovers in ten games so far.
Ty Bergman – The 6’7 big man will be one to watch going forward, he has a nice stroke and his able to stretch the defense. He has soft touch around the rim and does a nice job of finishing. He is shooting thirty-five percent from long range, shooting at least one three in every game but one so far this season and is shooting over fifty percent from inside the arc on the year.
Underclassman:
Regis has five underclassman on their varsity roster this year, all of them do not see time but it speaks to the youth movement they have going on. Kyle Sandler (So) is really the only one seeing major time right now, freshmen Archer VanSickle has also played in a few games to start the year. The other sophomores on the roster are, Andrew Leikam and Tavian Willsea. The JV team only has four juniors on it, two of which swing varsity in 6’6 big man Clay Nanke and Zach Samuels. The rest of the team is made up of seven sophomores and three freshmen, some of whom swing varsity as well. It will be fun to see how these young players grow over the next few years.
Next Game:
Regis will host another tough game on 1/11 at 2:30 against Columbine.
