Now in his fourth year on the Lions varsity, Micah Garrett has seen and experienced plenty during his time. The athletic 6-foot-3 guard is putting it all together this last season of high school basketball and while his college recruitment is still getting sorted out, his goals remain focused on the team.
“We’ve been working hard in practice and ‘V’ (head coach Eric Viuhkola) has been pushing us every day,” Garrett said. “We’re getting better and that shows in the games. He just makes us go way harder and the intensity in practice is like 100 times harder than last year and we’re getting better.”
On an individual level, you can see the difference in Garrett’s game. In the past, he may have forced the action but this season he’s allowing the game to come more to him. This has included spotting up more from the outside and in West Linn’s recent win over Westview, he showed off his range by smoothly knocking down six threes. He put in hard work this summer on diversifying his game and it’s paying off.
“It’s been going really well for me and my shot has improved a lot,” Garrett said. “People see me as a slasher, a scorer, driving to the basket but I’ve been showing that I can shoot and play an all-around game as a guard.”
The fall signing period came and went and Garrett remains unsigned. His one Division I offer right now is from Jackson State and Garrett has been talking with them and hopes to make an official visit there soon. He’s also been talking some with Portland State but remains open in his recruitment.
“Right now I’m just waiting until the end of the decision to make a decision and I’m staying patient with it,” Garrett said. “My time will come, I’m just going to be patient with it.”
Instead, Garrett is honed in on the season as the Lions head into Three Rivers League play. The senior guard believes the sky is the limit for West Linn. “I think that if we keep on working hard and Coach V – he’s a legendary coach – we can make it to Chiles,” Garrett said. “We can win a state championship.”
Garrett currently ranks the #2 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
