The talented 6-foot-5, 175-pound point guard is hoping to take Central Catholic to the state championship this season and quite honestly, he’s not settling for anything less. The Rams made a statement at the Les Schwab Invitational this past weekend with a couple big wins over Oregon teams and as he is sorting out his college recruitment, he’s honed in on taking his team to the promised land.
“Every game we go into, our focus is always there,” Amato said. “We start really well. A lot of the time we already know the plays we want to run and the whole mindset is that we can always win.”
Central Catholic posted big wins over Grant and Churchill in this past weekend’s tournament (the other two games were tough losses to nationally ranked teams Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman). At the Les Schwab, Amato was rock solid averaging 9.3 points and almost 4.0 assists per game, triggering the offense from the point guard position.
“My mentality is to lead the team,” Amato said. “Sometimes I may not have the best game but others will pick it up. I’ll always be at the focal point, when people are down I’ll pick them up, tell people to shoot, tell them what to do. I’m trying to be more aggressive (offensively) too.”
A big point guard with athleticism in addition to size, colleges have been well aware of Amato’s potential for quite some time. He still holds offers from Pacific and Eastern Washington and the Eagles were actually in attendance at the LSI to watch some of his games. Amato made an unofficial visit to Pacific in June but is hoping to make another trip there and some other campuses in the next few months.
“I’m trying to plan my officials but I don’t know when and where yet, I’m trying to figure it all out,” Amato said.
Amato noted that things should get settled soon now that the LSI has concluded. In the meantime, he’s staying steady with the rest of his senior season for which he has high expectations.
“I think we can win state,” Amato said. “Of course there are other good teams in the state but it’s early in the year. I think we’re the best team in the state.”
Amato currently ranks as the #5 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
