Continue ReadingBOLD is currently the number one ranked team in Class A basketball and lead by playmaking lead guard Gavin Vosika. Prep Hoops caught up with Gavin and Warriors head coach Jake Brustuen today to talk about the season.
‘The season has been great so far,” Gavin said. “We are 11-0 I believe and knocked off some high ranked teams (Henning, Melrose, Minneota, Nicollet, Minnewaska Area, Cass Lake-Bena, Morris Area, etc). Our schedule is pretty tough but Coach Brustuen did that for a reason for the fact that we will be more prepared when it comes playoff time.
“As far as me and the team I feel like we are yet to play our best game and need to come out every night as if it’s an undefeated team we are playing even if it’s one of the less tough teams in our conference or what not. I feel I have been playing well, a few rough spots here and there but can always clean that up. I always try to do what my team needs me to do to win, rebound, play scrappy defense, and find my open teammates when they are hitting shots.”
Gavin Vosika with MN Matrix 17uGavin is currently giving his team 17.7 points, eight rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 4.7 steals per game while shooting 48.5 percent from the floor, 44 percent from the arc, and 62 percent at the foul line. Vosika only takes 9-10 shots a game (about two a game at the arc) as the team balance is excellent. Drew Sagedahl, Jordan Sagedahl, and Matt Moorse are other key pieces that can score consistently for the team.
“As a team our ultimate goal is to make the State Tournament and that will always be in the back of our mind,” Gavin said. “But for the regular season we’re trying to make a statement in the conference because Melrose has had that banner since like 2012.”
BOLD knocked off Melrose 73-40 giving them a two game lead over Minnewaska Area and a 2.5 game lead over Melrose and Benson in the West Centra Conference at the moment. Goal one seems to be, hold that conference lead and grab that conference championship. Goal two seems to be, make it to the state tournament for the first team since Bird Island-Lake Lillian did in 1981 (Bird Island is the “B” in Bold and Lake Lillian is the “L” in BOLD). Olivia (the “O” in BOLD) hasn’t been to state since 1919 (The “D” is for District). Goal three? The first state title the area has had since Bird Island-Lake Lillian won the championship in 1980.
“We are going for the conference title and I don’t believe BOLD has ever won the conference in basketball,” Gavin said.
What about Gavin’s goal as an individual player?
“As far as my individual goal it would be picking up one of the scholarship spots that Northern State has left open. I visited there last year and loved it but with the new coaching change there it would be nice to get back for a visit and meet the new staff. At the moment we are trying to set up a visit for the 25th of January.”
A number of schools are talking to Vosika and with good reason. Coach Brustuen detailed why Vosika is the impact player he is at BOLD.
“Gav is a strong, athletic point guard that is always looking to do what our team needs him to do to win,” Brustuen explained. “Will always make the right pass or read and is unselfish almost to a fault at times. Leads from the front of all our practice drills and reps and is a lead by example point guard.”
But it’s not just on the floor where Vosika is a leader, it’s off the floor as well!
“Gav has been helping with our youth camps since 9th grade and is a good role model for our younger kids,” Coach continued. “He’s a good student and hasn’t been in trouble since I’ve coached him in 8th grade. He’s good with the kids at camps and as a dad he’s great interacting with my son who loves to play around with Gav after games and on the weekends in the gym.”
Gavin VosikaSo if you are a college coach looking for a lead guard, we can tell you that Gavin Vosika is a high character leader and student athlete that produces consistently. What schools have contacted both Coach Brustuen and Gavin himself? And why would Gavin be a great fit for these schools?
“I think his strength and feel for the game will translate well as well as rebounding and athleticism can play the the next level,” Coach Brustuen said. He still would love to play at the D2 level and has a visit with Northern State again coming up on the 25th.
“That would be his dream scenario I think but he also has interest from Mayville State, Jamestown, Valley City, and U of Mary has been in contact as well as Bethany, St.Johns and Gustavus as well.”
“Schools who have contacted me are Northern State, Mayville State, Jamestown, U of Mary, Bethany, and St. John’s,” Gavin said. “I went on a visit to Northernb State last year and a game at Sioux Falls. But no other visit besides that one coming up the 25th to northern again.”
BOLD is primed for a post-season run and there is no better place for a young man to get recruited (during the high school season) then at the state tournament. How are BOLD’s chances looking? Very good as the team has a lot of players who have spent time with the team winning a lot of games.
“We have a lot of experience back that have now played with each other for many years,” Coach Brustuen stated. “We have a group of kids who love basketball and like not only playing hoops together but hanging out off the court as well. They have gelled so well and once Jordan (Sagedahl) gets back to 100 percent will only get stronger.”
So keep an eye on the BOLD Warriors and definitely keep an eye on their lead guard Gavin Vosika.
