Recruiting Report: Aaron Russell (2020)
Aaron Russell, a class of 2020 guard from Bishop McNamara High School, is coming off a memorable performance Thursday night on the road against nationally-ranked Paul VI. The lefty sharpshooter, who scored a team-high 23 points, got into a nice rhythm during the first quarter where he hit 3 treys. He also hit a couple of clutch free throws to help his team retain the lead late in the fourth quarter. Those were not his only contributions to the win. Russell is known as a shooter, but there are other parts of his game that make him an effective all-around player.
“I think my ability to rebound and facilitate are underrated,” Russell told Prep Hoops after tallying 6 rebounds and 3 assists on Thursday night.
Russell needs to tighten up his handle a bit more, but he showed the ability to accurately deliver pocket passes off the bounce in pick and rolls. His overall scoring ability has improved since the past season. Russell showcases a nice in-between game that consists of floaters and pull-ups.
“I need to work on going right more and playing lockdown defense,” he stated.
UNC Wilmington and UCF are a couple of Division One schools that have reportedly shown interest in Russell, along with a host of Division Two and Three schools. What is he looking for in a school?
“I’m looking for something that fits me. My personality. Something that makes me a better person.”
What are his goals?
“My goals for this year are obviously to win a championship and make the first team.”
Given the way the game is played today and the premium that is put on shooting, there should be plenty more Division One level suitors that will emerge in the race to land Russell. But for now, his role at McNamara will continue to grow as he comes into his own.
