Top programs stretching from Tennessee all the way to the West Coast bring high end talent and excitement to the packed stands in this two-day hoops extravaganza. This year’s event was as impressive as ever. Illinois was well represented with 6 of the state’s top programs in action. Here are the Illinois underclassmen who made their presence felt throughout the weekend:
6’5 So Jeremiah Talton | Quincy
There is significant buzz around Quincy surrounding their sophomore star Jeremiah Talton, and rightfully so. He already looks the part at 6’5+ with length. He is physically gifted and has a very high ceiling. He has great elevation on his jumper and rose up and buried a number of threes in Saturday’s win over Centralia. He has pogo-stick bounce and made a killing snatching offensive boards and finishing put backs through contact. Jeremiah’s stock is rising weekly, and he is well on his way to being a household name throughout the state.
6’1 Jr Grant Hyer | Quincy Notre Dame
Grant is a gamer! Very heads up, tough player with natural leadership qualities. High IQ and max effort guard who can run the show as well as operate efficiently off the ball. He torched Davenport West at all three levels. He weaves through traffic with smooth efficiency in transition, has a devastating euro-step, and a crafty lay-up package. Quality shooter from beyond the arc and does a nice job setting up teammates for scoring opportunities.
6’7 Jr Max Wedding | Quincy Notre Dame
Very fundamentally sound forward with a pretty solid back to the basket game. Utilizes footwork well, strong crab dribble and touch over the left shoulder. Good touch off the glass. Runs the floor hard. Effective in the pick and roll. Controls the paint and the glass. He had a nice showing against Davenport West.
6’0 Jr Colton Sigel | Rock Island
Colton put on an impressive shooting clinic against Iowa City West on Saturday. Dead-eye sharpshooter from the corners with plus range on the wings. He knocked down a trifecta of triples and got loose for a leak-out score for an efficient 11 point performance.
5’10 Jr Na’shawn Townsen | Corliss
Na’shawn had a solid weekend in Quincy. Two-way player to keep an eye on. He put up an impressive 23 points, 7 assists, 6 steals against a tough Liberty (NV) team and followed that up with another solid outing against Chaminade. Does a good job of getting separation and creating his own shot. Fluid athlete that is crafty off the bounce, nice hesi-game. Range extends beyond the arc. Impacts the game on the defensive end.
