The solid 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior has been for the most part under the radar so far this season but after Friday night, that’s no longer the case. Against Jefferson, Rymal stepped up and knocked down seven threes, making it known that he’s one to watch the rest of the year.
While Franklin ended up dropping the game, there’s no question that Rymal’s play kept it close. He converted his threes on both spotting up and receiving the pass as well as catching it off of screens, and his range extended beyond the high school three-point line. Rymal isn’t just a standstill shooter either as he also created some off the dribble and was able to get to the free throw line. And outside of offense, he used his size to help contribute on the boards with seven rebounds.
According to Franklin head coach Scott Aker, Rymal largely deferred to his teammates early on in the season. They’ve encouraged him to step up offensively and on Friday, he certainly delivered. “I like to look for my teammates and play make as much as I can,” Rymal said. “I like to shoot the ball but I need to work on my handle a little bit and I feel like I’ll be solid there. It started off slow but tonight it picked back up.”
Rymal, who played JV last season, helped prepare for this year by playing AAU basketball with Pacific Rim. He felt that it helped give him confidence in his game and he’s hopeful that things will eventually lead to his dream – playing basketball at the college level.
“If someone gives me an opportunity I’d love to take it, it doesn’t matter what division,” Rymal said. “I want to stay close to home but then again, if I can’t get anything here I’ll go somewhere else to play.”
There will be plenty of time for Rymal as he gets on the radar of college coaches – especially if he continues the way he played against Jefferson. He feels that Franklin is on the right trajectory.
“We’ve had our ups and downs but we’re definitely a strong team,” Rymal said. “We’re not going back down. I think we’re going to do a lot better than people think we are. The Oregonian has us ranked fifth and we’re a lot better than that.”
