The 5-foot-9, 150-pound lefty missed the first few games after tweaking a knee but he’s made his presence felt for South Medford since coming back. He’s flat out gotten hot in a few contests for the Panthers, who have already far surpassed their two-win total from last season and are hoping for even more.
We recently got a chance to catch Hunter in a road win over Lakeridge. Coming off the bench, the senior was counted on for instant offense – and that scoring came from long range. Hunter knocked down five threes, with the shots coming in different ways, off the catch-and-shoot, coming off of screens, and also one-two dribble pull-ups.
“It’s just finding the right pocket and getting into a rhythm,” Hunter said. “It’s just confidence honestly.”
Hunter’s stroke is pure with a quick release and nice rotation on the ball. There have been some nights where the shot hasn’t been falling this season and the knee has been admittedly a factor, but the senior continues to work hard. “It’s been a little sore but it’s been good enough to play through,” Hunter said. “I’ve just got to keep on working. I’ve had some off games but I just need to learn from that and move on and play better.”
Hunter’s hope is that he’ll get the opportunity to showcase himself for the college level. He notes that during the summer while playing AAU with The LAB, he heard from Cal State San Marcos and the University of Dallas and while he’s definitely aiming high when it comes to school there are certain things he is looking for.
“Possibly D-I that would be a blessing but D-II is what I’m mainly looking at,” Hunter said. “I’m kind of interested in art and design stuff (with school) and with basketball, just a good campus, team ball, and good people.”
More games where he’s stroking it well from long range will definitely help his cause. South Medford enters league play having already won 7 games – more than three times as many as last season – and Hunter believes the Panthers can definitely contend.
“We just play well together,” Hunter said. “We stay composed, we listen to our coaches, and we play with confidence. I really think we can make the playoffs.”
